Rangers: "Standout" teen gem has more goals than Lammers this season

Glasgow Rangers finally gave a convincing performance at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership as Philippe Clement’s reign started with a bang.

Hibernian were the visitors and having gone undefeated under new manager Nick Montgomery, the tie had the makings of a potential banana skin for the new manager, yet this was avoided as the Light Blues strolled to a comfortable 4-0 win and a new era in Glasgow has begun.

The Belgian will hope that this result gives the players a much-needed confidence boost and with a European tie against Sparta Prague to come on Thursday evening, a chance to build momentum will come around rather swiftly.

The 49-year-old tactician looked like the most qualified person for the role following Michael Beale’s sacking and with a debut win banked, his priority should now be to get a tune out of the current crop of players and enable them to showcase their true talents.

Cyriel Dessers enjoyed a decent game against Hibs, getting on the scoresheet while making three key passes, and he could soon be revitalised under Clement as the season goes on.

Danilo and Todd Cantwell also returned from their recent injury woes, and they will both be dying to showcase their vast talents under the new manager.

Rangers forward Sam Lammers.

One name who will also be keen on stepping up to the plate is that of Sam Lammers, who has failed to really woo the Gers support, despite having wonderful technical ability.

Has Sam Lammers been a good signing for Rangers?

With Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, and Scott Arfield all leaving the club once their contracts expired at the end of last season, Beale knew he had to add some much-needed quality and depth to his attacking options.

Lammers was identified as a target, yet with his goalscoring record rather poor, it was clear Beale was looking at utilising the Dutchman just behind the strikers rather than as a centre-forward.

Since the start of the 2020/21 campaign, the 26-year-old dud had scored just six goals across 76 matches, and it was hardly a goal return that was going to satisfy the masses at Ibrox.

Beale clearly was not deterred by this and secured his signature from Atalanta for a fee in the region of £3m and on the surface, this was a lot for someone with such a poor record in the final third.

This has not improved since joining the Light Blues either, as he has scored just once in 17 matches so far during the 2023/24 season.

Even when you take his lack of goals out of the equation, the former Eintracht Frankfurt forward – who was part of the side that defeated Rangers in the 2022 Europa League final – has failed to stand out.

Indeed, he has failed to create a big chance in the Premiership so far, while ranking third across the squad for big chances missed (three) and ranks in a lowly 15th spot for key passes per game (0.6), suggesting that he is not contributing across other metrics either.

Unless Clement can give him a major confidence boost in the coming weeks, Lammers may go down as yet another summer signing who has failed to live up to expectations and these are ultimately what Beale was judged on along with the poor results.

With so many attacking players departing Glasgow over the summer, Beale looks to have made a mistake when buying Lammers, especially as one teenager who left the club currently has more goals than him this season – Robbie Ure.

What happened to Robbie Ure?

The 19-year-old striker emerged through the academy at the club and began to make waves for the B team during the 2021/22 campaign, scoring twice in the UEFA Youth League and he built on this platform last season, becoming a key goal-scoring threat for the B side.

He continued his wonderful form in the Youth League which included another three goals scored and he impressed in the tie against Napoli youth, with Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie stating Ure was a “standout” for the team.

By this point, he had already featured for the senior side, making his debut against Queen of the South in a League Cup in August under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

He certainly took the opportunity with both hands as he scored less than ten minutes into his first ever appearance for the Light Blues, and it looked as though he was a player who could develop into an excellent centre-forward.

He even drew praise from Arfield, who lauded the youngster as “magic” during a post-match interview, and it would have given him a wonderful confidence boost.

Ure even managed to play twice in the Premiership that season and hopes were high that he could kick on over the summer.

With his contract expiring, the Gers offered him a new deal but the 19-year-old wanted to depart the Ibrox side and go after new challenges, and following a trial at AZ Alkmaar he eventually ended up signing for Belgian side Anderlecht in what looks like a decent move for the talented striker.

He has joined the setup at RCSA Futures, which is their B team, and they play in the Belgian second tier, yet it gives Ure the chance to experience first-team football on a regular basis rather than warm the bench at Rangers.

He has started off rather well too, finding the back of the net twice across just three matches and if he keeps this sort of form up, he may just be given an opportunity in the senior side before the end of the season.

Although not the immediate answer to Beale’s problems, Ure has scored more goals than Lammers this season, in far fewer appearances too, and perhaps integrating him more into the first team would have been a wise move.

It looks as though the Ibrox side have fumbled badly on this one, especially if he goes on to make a name for himself on the continent.

Lammers will surely embrace the chance of a fresh start under Clement, yet Ure is currently outscoring the Dutchman across the current campaign and the ceiling is high for the young sensation, which means that there is work to be done before the former Gers youngster can be forgotten.

The stars of Sunday's victory over El Tri lined up alongside the Nations League trophy to feature in a hilarious photoshoot. In it, Robinson stunned in a white cowboy hot while multiple players donned ski goggles. Several chucked up a 'three' fingers sign in reference to the USMNT's Nations League wins since its inauguration in 2018, which remains a record tally of the CONCACAF nations.

The shoot lined up different sets of club team-mates to strike a pose, such as Juventus duo Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie, AC Milan stars Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic, and the PSV trio of Sergino Dest, Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi. Standing alone was Bournemouth man Tyler Adams, who scored a screamer on his return to the starting line-up. Adams did, however, reveal after the 2-0 win that he was forced to have a "tough conversation" with coach Gregg Berhalter, as his minutes continue to be managed.

Moyes must bin West Ham ace who had fewer touches than Fabianski against Brentford

West Ham United resoundingly beat an Arsenal side midweek in the Carabao Cup that had only tasted defeat prior to RC Lens this season in the Champions League, David Moyes' Hammers ruthless at the London Stadium as the Gunners lost 3-1.

Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus impressed again in this clash, Bowen helping himself to his seventh goal of the campaign already in all competitions whilst Kudus netted only his second goal to date in his new claret and blue colours.

gideon-kidoa-jarrod-bowen-west-ham-opinion

Not every player for the Irons covered themselves in glory from this fantastic night however, with Said Benrahma registering fewer touches than Hammers goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (19 – 38) and, in tow, he unfortunately let the contest pass him by.

The ex-Brentford winger must be dropped, therefore, for West Ham's next match in the Premier League away at his former team, after the Algerian attacker played like a passenger in the EFL Cup, today.

Benrahma's performance vs Arsenal

Substituted off in the 81st minute for James Ward-Prowse, West Ham's number 22 was unable to provide any cutting edge down the right wing with the other attackers stepping up to the mark to spare Benrahma's blushes.

The 28-year-old forward failed to register a single effort on Aaron Ramsdale's net per Sofascore with the stand-in Gunners goalkeeper looking shaky all contest, ineffective with his 19 touches on the ball when he was found by a fellow Irons' shirt.

Fabianski in the West Ham goal would have double the touches of the underwhelming attacker with 38, his centre-back teammate Nayef Aguerd coming in with a far superior 59 touches also per Sofascore.

Accurate with 10 of his 11 passes on the night, Benrahma still could not quite muster up an assist with Moyes hauling him off the London Stadium pitch with nine minutes remaining.

He must be binned by Moyes completely when West Ham make the short journey across from Stratford to West London today to play Brentford, with Benrahma not at his best whatsoever in recent weeks.

Benrahma's numbers this season

Rooted to the bench against Aston Villa and Liverpool, the 21-time Algeria international has seen his minutes with the Irons slashed this season.

The winger was only afforded 33 minutes on the pitch in total versus Everton to make a lasting impact, unable to break down a resilient defence.

With Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, and Lucas Paqueta all regularly picked ahead of him, Benrahma does run the risk of being completely frozen out by Moyes if he does not improve his output.

Said-Benrahma-in-action

Only picking up one assist this campaign on top of zero goals, West Ham's number 22 – who has made 146 appearances for the club – could be moved on sooner rather than later out of the building.

His individual performance against Manchester City sticks out as another below-par display, albeit he was only given 22 minutes to make an impact against Pep Guardiola's title-chasers.

The ex-Brentford man couldn't conjure up any magic to help his side when introduced, losing his only ground duel of the contest when subsituted on alongside being unsuccessful with his one dribble attempt per Sofascore to kickstart a rare Hammers foray forward.

Given a rare first-team start against Arsenal and underperforming in the process, Moyes' decision whether or not to include Benrahma for his side's next Premier League match will be an easy one.

The Algeria international must make the most of his next opportunity to shine on the pitch as another disappointing display could put further doubt in the manager's mind when considering whether or not to start him in the future.

Cricket Australia settles case with woman sacked over abortion comments

A woman sacked by Cricket Australia after she criticised a Tasmanian politician’s policy on abortion access in the state has reached an out of court settlement with the board

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Sep-2018Cricket Australia has avoided the potential of an extensive court battle by settling their case with former employee Angela Williamson who was sacked follow tweets about abortion.Last month, Williamson was heavily critical of Tasmania’s Health Minister Michael Ferguson for his comments on the state’s abortion policy, calling his comments “irresponsible, gutless and reckless”, which led to Cricket Australia claiming she had breached their social media policy. The decision generated significant international headlines and raised questions about the extent of freedom employees had to express political opinions without endangering their employment.Williamson, who had initially rejected an alternate job offer from Cricket Australia to pursue her case in Federal Court, had made strong allegations about the role Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman played in her sacking. Hodgman maintained he had not played any role in Williamson’s dismissal. In confirming the case had been settled out of court, Cricket Australia did not give any other details.”Following ongoing discussions, Cricket Australia, Cricket Tasmania and Angela Williamson have been able to reach a mutually satisfactory resolution of the matter,” a spokesman said.Williamson had been compelled to fly to Melbourne from Hobart to have a surgical abortion earlier this year due to not being able to access the service in Tasmania. She had been employed by Cricket Tasmania for 18 months at the time of her dismissal, and had, prior to working for Cricket Australia, held a job as a government relations manager in Tasmania.Williamson had sought compensation for loss of income, humiliation, damage to her reputation, anxiety and distress.”I spoke my mind on a political issue because I believe strongly in the reproductive health rights of Tasmanian women,” Williamson had said around the time of her dismissal. “I am disappointed the case wasn’t resolved today but I am prepared to continue my fight in the Federal Court.”

Man Utd’s replacement for Erik ten Hag could be "blindingly obvious"

Manchester United have lost nine games from 18 this season in all competitions and pressure is continuously piling on manager Erik ten Hag. A narrow 1-0 victory over Luton Town at Old Trafford on Saturday did little to convince anyone that the Red Devils were back to their best.

The international break may offer the players and supporters some respite but a daunting run of fixtures awaits the side, including three consecutive away matches upon returning to action against Everton, Galatasaray and Newcastle United.

If that run isn't bad enough, United also face Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Liverpool before December draws to a close and Ten Hag may find himself out of a job by Christmas.

While there are not many clear candidates to succeed the Dutchman, there is one man who could finally lead the club back to glory.

The man who could replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd

A relatively unknown entity when he moved to the Premier League last year, Roberto De Zerbi has established himself as one of the best coaches in the top flight since succeeding Graham Potter in the Brighton and Hove Albion dugout.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi shakes hands with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after the match

By the end of his debut campaign with the Seagulls, the Italian coach guided the club on the south coast to sixth, earning a spot in the coveted UEFA Europa League.

It was recently reported that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has tipped De Zerbi to be his successor when he eventually leaves the Premier League champions, with the Spaniard's contract set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

However, former Liverpool and Man City star Robbie Fowler believes that Manchester United should make a move for the Brighton head coach, claiming that he is the "blindingly obvious" candidate to replace Ten Hag.

Since De Zerbi's arrival, Brighton have been able to go toe-to-toe with the biggest sides in the division. Hull City manager Liam Rosenior even called De Zerbi an "absolute genius" following a 1-1 draw with Guardiola's treble-winners at the Amex last season.

But would De Zerbi be the perfect replacement for Ten Hag that Fowler seems to think he is?

De Zerbi vs Ten Hag

The Brighton boss came out on top in emphatic fashion when his side travelled to Old Trafford back in September. The Seagulls picked up all three points with a comfortable 3-1 victory and Ten Hag even changed shape from his regular 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 diamond, with Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund playing down the middle, in order to cut off the centre of the pitch where Brighton like to progress the ball.

The visitors struggled to play through the middle and United's tactical approach was working. However, De Zerbi quickly adapted his team's playing style to take advantage of the hosts' lack of wide players. This helped Brighton to break through Manchester United's pressure easily and even led to a 30-pass goal in the second half.

In the end, Ten Hag had too much respect for his counterpart as the Red Devils crumbled, leading Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher to brand Brighton's football as "out of this world".

The Dutch coach garnered criticism in recent weeks after admitting that United "can't play like Ajax", despite spending over £400m on new signings since taking over in 2022.

De Zerbi, on the other hand, has consistently been dogmatic with his attacking, possession-based style, refusing to budge regardless of the opposition throughout his managerial career. Even when Brighton lost Moises Caicedo to Chelsea in the summer, the club acquired Mahmoud Dahoud and continued to play the same way as last season.

Brighton are overachieving under De Zerbi, but the Italian coach seems destined for one of Europe's biggest clubs and saving Man United from any further decline could be his next great challenge.

Erling Haaland ‘not on the same planet’ as Harry Kane! Man City star singled out for more criticism after Aston Villa benching as Bayern Munich forward told he could play ‘No.10’

Haaland was criticised again after Villa benchingMan City star told he pales in comparison to KaneEngland striker hailed for his link-up play & passing abilityWHAT HAPPENED?

After being dropped from the starting line-up against Aston Villa, the Norwegian forward has been told that his qualities pale when compared to Kane. The English skipper was judged as a more complete player than Haaland as the former Tottenham forward can still be lethal with his all-round capabilities when he is starved of service in attack.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT HAS BEEN SAID

In the, Craig Burley while comparing Haaland to Kane, said: "I don't think it is any surprise that some of Haaland's all-round game has room for improvement. He is about physicality and goals. When it comes to all-around play – I am not suggesting he is a worse goalscorer – he is not on the same planet as a Harry Kane. In terms of his link-up play, Kane can drop off and play passes like a No.10. He can play 50-60-70-yard ping passes, round the corner, you name it.

"Karim Benzema, drifting around the pitch when he was at Real Madrid. Flicking little balls and linking up play. But that is not Haaland. He needs the goals to keep those numbers up because lots of his other game needs polishing."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Haaland has been getting a lot of stick since his unimpressive performance against Arsenal after he missed a couple of gilt-edged chances. Manchester United legend, Roy Keane, described him as a 'League Two' striker after the 1-1 draw with the Gunners and after the benching against Villa, the chorus has just got louder.

Despite the criticism targetted at Haaland, the Norwegian has found the net 29 times in 35 appearances across competitions. He will be hoping to find his scoring boots once again when City face Crystal Palace on Saturday in their next Premier League encounter.

Healy and Villani make it 2-0 Australia

The pair struck fifties after Megan Schutt restricted New Zealand to a below-par total, sealing the T20I series with a game to play

Alex Malcolm01-Oct-2018Half-centuries from Alyssa Healy and Elyse Villani proved the depth of Australia’s batting in the second Twenty20 international, and guided the hosts to a series victory over New Zealand at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.Meg Lanning and Rachel Haynes controlled the chase in the opening match in Sydney, and Healy and Villani did the same in the second, as the home side cruised past New Zealand’s sub-par total of 145 with seven balls to spare and six wickets in hand.Australia again wobbled early in the run chase with Beth Mooney clean bowled for 0 in the second over by a superb yorker from Lea Tahuhu. Ashley Gardner was then run out in unusual circumstances in the fifth over. She was left stranded by Healy who stood motionless at the non-striker’s end following Gardner’s call for a single. Sophie Devine’s throw from midwicket half-volleyed in front of the stumps and New Zealand keeper Katey Martin got herself in a tangle as she unsuccessfully attempted to reach forward to collect the throw and dislodge the stumps in one motion. After a long deliberation the third umpire deemed it was the ball that had hit the stumps direct and dislodged the bail, and not Martin’s gloves or body. But Healy went on to show her class with 10 boundaries to all corners of the picturesque ground. Villani’s power finished the job to hand Australia an unassailable lead in the three-match series.Earlier, Player of the Match Megan Schutt delivered a miserly spell of 3 for 15 from four overs to keep the total under 150 despite a stunning innings from opener Suzie Bates. Schutt forced both Sophie Devine and Jessica Watkin to hole out in the deep in the Powerplay to leave Bates with a lot of work to do. She was up to the task smashing 11 fours and two enormous sixes in her 77 from just 52 balls. It took a brilliant diving catch from Healy to stop her from marching towards a second T20 international hundred.Bates did get decent support from captain Amy Satterthwaite. The pair put on 60 in just six overs, which included six fours and three sixes, to give Australia some concerns.Seamer Delissa Kimmince held her nerve with a very tidy spell amongst the early carnage, claiming the dangerous wicket of Satterthwaite and conceding just 17 from her four overs to give Australia a very manageable chase.

Pochettino eyeing £69m Chelsea swoop for "phenomenal" Thiago Silva heir in January

In football, waving goodbye to a player, manager or owner can often be the hardest thing to deal with in the sport – like in every walk of life – and that is an experience Chelsea have become all too familiar with in recent times.

In the Blues instance, heartache has stemmed from watching club legends depart the club, namely Frank Lampard and Eden Hazard, without replacing them.

Next summer, the west London outfit will have to prepare for the possibility of Thiago Silva leaving Stamford Bridge with the 39-year-old's contract expiring in June 2024.

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva.

Whilst the Brazilian isn't in the same bracket as the likes of Lampard and Hazard, the void he'll leave in the heart of Chelsea's defence will be colossal, and the Blues reportedly have his replacement lined up.

Chelsea transfer news – Ousmane Diomande

As per reports in Portugal last month, Chelsea want to sign Sporting CP's star centre-back Ousmane Diomande but face stiff competition from divisional rivals, Newcastle United.

After signing from FC Midtjylland in January 2023, Diomande shot onto the scene as a promising ball-playing centre-back last term, featuring on 13 occasions in the Primeira Liga, sparking interest from Arsenal in the summer.

Now a regular fixture in the starting XI for the Portuguese giants, the 19-year-old has an ever-growing list of admirers having transformed into one of the most talented defenders in Europe.

Despite acquiring a long list of central defenders since Todd Boehly took over, including Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, Chelsea see the Ivorian as a potential heir to Silva's throne.

With a release clause of £69m (€80m), as per Sporting CP's website, the battle to land Diomande looks set to be a highly contested one and it is imperative that Mauricio Pochettino's side come out on top.

Ousmane Diomande's style of play

Diomande has every ingredient in his locker to become the complete centre-back in years to come with his main strengths being his physicality, vision and speed.

In a possession-heavy Sporting side, the Ivorian has to be comfortable on the ball, receiving it from his keeper before splitting the midfield with his astute and assured passing range.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-gossip-arsenal-sporting-edu-arteta-jurrien-timber

According to talent scout Jacek Kulig, the teenager shares a lot of similarities with Tottenham Hotspurs Christian Romero, given they are both comfortable in possession, are quick enough to cover ground when needed while they are also rash and can commit unnecessary fouls which can put their team under pressure.

In Chelsea's current side, Pochettino deploys a system that requires the defence to be comfortable at driving out with the ball and although this is an attribute that Silva has excelled at throughout his career, Diomande's ball-playing abilities in the past year have eclipsed the Brazilians across most metrics.

Although Silva is statistically better with his short and long passing accuracy, as delineated by the table above, Diomande makes more positive actions in possession, demonstrating the power and strength in his ball-carrying that can fit seamlessly alongside Colwill at Stamford Bridge.

Silva, who turns 40 next year, is one of the greatest defenders of this generation and when he does depart, he'll leave a huge void that needs filling, but the "phenomenal" Diomande – as lauded by journalist Antonio Mango – has proven he is more than capable of doing so.

A crushing 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers wrapped up Wrexham’s latest promotion, with Paul Mullin among the goals once again as a surge past the finishing post was made. Parkinson had not prepared himself for scenes of wild celebration in that contest, with two games still left to take in.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson told reporters of seeing Wrexham get the job done with room to spare: “I came into the game thinking let's concentrate on what we have got to do. I was not really expecting those results to both go in our favour. I think that is the best way to approach it. My mind was on going to Crewe next week and having to finish the job off. I could sense the crowd, it looked like a good day for us, but it wasn't until a couple of minutes to go I said to my son George, who is one of our analysts, 'just give me the run down', and he told me the scores. That was a great moment. Obviously then you know it's a done deal and I am so pleased. Last year we knew win and we were up; today it was win and we had to rely on other things around us but it was a great achievement for everybody connected with the club, it is not easy to get back to back promotions.”

Oman to host Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands for T20I quadrangular series

It will mark the first ever T20I series to be played in Oman, and the first visit by a Test-playing nation

Peter Della Penna22-Nov-2018Oman Cricket has reached an agreement in principle to host Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands for a quadrangular T20I series early next year for the first ever T20I series to be played in Oman. Ireland’s participation would also mark the first ever visit by a Test nation to play matches in Oman. The announcement of the quadrangular series was made by Oman Cricket officials during a victory function held for the team after their undefeated run at WCL Division Three on home soil earlier this week. Multiple sources from the other teams confirmed that the series has been tentatively scheduled for February 10-17 at the Oman Cricket Academy in Al Amerat. All four teams participated in the opening round of the 2016 World T20 in India, during which Oman scored a famous win over Ireland. As a result of their appearance in India, all four countries have been exempted from participating in the regional qualifying process leading into the 2020 World T20 in Australia and instead have been fast-tracked into the global qualifier.According to a source, the global qualifier is scheduled for October 2019 at a venue yet to be determined. By virtue of their exemption from regional qualifying, all four teams are keen for opportunities to play in the lead-up to the global qualifier in October and this series provides them that. The three European sides staged a T20I tri-series held in the Netherlands last June, which Scotland won after sweeping both matches against Netherlands and tying Ireland once to end on five points. That was Scotland’s last T20I series whereas the Netherlands have since played a one-off T20I against Nepal in July at Lord’s that ended with no result. Meanwhile, Ireland lost a three-match series at home to Afghanistan this past August in their most recent T20I action. While the Oman Cricket Academy has two grounds that would allow for matches to be played simultaneously, the main turf ground is equipped with stadium floodlights. Such infrastructure may provide a good simulation exercise for conditions at the global qualifier later in October as well as for the 2020 World T20 in Australia.Aside from the recently concluded WCL Division Three tournament, Oman has hosted two prior series at the Al Amerat facility. UAE toured for three one-day matches in April 2017 ahead of Oman’s participation at WCL Division Three in Uganda a month later. USA also toured in December 2017 for three one-day matches while the Oman Cricket Academy building, which includes seven indoor nets, was still under construction.
