Pant wallops 32-ball hundred, the fastest by an Indian

Rishabh Pant smashed the second-fastest hundred in T20 history to help Delhi cruise to a 10-wicket win over Himachal Pradesh at the Feroz Shah Kotla

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jan-2018Rishabh Pant smashed the second-fastest hundred in T20 history to help Delhi cruise to a 10-wicket win over Himachal Pradesh at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The 20-year old brought up his century in 32 balls – two behind Chris Gayle – and finished with an unbeaten 38-ball 116 as Delhi chased a target of 145 with 8.2 overs to spare. Pant made 104 of his runs in boundaries with 12 sixes and eight fours. After a middling Ranji Trophy season, he has found some T20 form leading into the IPL with scores of 38, 9 and 51 in his most recent matches. Pant was one of three players retained by Delhi Daredevils ahead of the 2018 season. His state team Delhi, however, had taken the captaincy away from him prior to the start of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.Agarwal blitz takes Karnataka to Super League

Mayank Agarwal’s 58-ball 86 powered Karnataka to a 20-run win over Kerala in Vizianagaram. After Karnataka opted to bat, openers Agarwal and Karun Nair shared a 42-run stand before Nair was dismissed by Sandeep Warrier. Manish Pandey then fell cheaply but Agarwal and R Samarth (27 off 23 balls) put on 85 runs to hoist Karnataka’s total to 181. By the time Agarwal was dismissed in the 17th over, he had scored nine fours and three sixes. This was Agarwal’s second fifty in the tournament.
Kerala were off to a flying start in their response with captain Sanju Samson, who smashed 71 off 41 balls, and Vishnu Vinod (46 off 26 balls) adding 109 in 9.3 overs. This was Samson’s second successive fifty. The middle and the lower order wobbled, though, after Vinod and Samson were dismissed in the space of three overs, with only two other batsmen reaching double figures. Legspinner Praven Dubey, who picked up four wickets against Tamil Nadu, finished with figures of 3 for 35. With four wins from five games, Karnataka qualified for the Super League phase.

“Obviously, I felt good about it [the record] when I came to know, you always do, when that happens,” Pant told .”Last season [2016-17 season] too, I had scored the fastest first-class hundred in India and then this year [2017-18 season] in T20; so yes, it feels good to see your name in the record books. But one doesn’t play for records. I try to perform and while doing that records happen…. like Virat [Kohli] keeps scoring [I try to do the same]. Records happen if you keep scoring, so at the end of the day, if you are scoring runs then everything is good.”I had gone to my club [Sonnet Club] and met my coach and he told me a couple of things and I think that has helped. It was about my technique. Tarak [Sinha] sir and Devender sir … they always help. I think when I practice there [with them at the club] and come[to play] I get a different kind of confidence that I will definitely do well. I think that is what has helped.”After electing to bowl, Delhi put in a disciplined effort to restrict Himachal Pradesh to less than 150. Captain Pradeep Sangwan picked up two wickets, while each of the other five bowlers used accounted for one scalp each. Himachal Pradesh were in a spot of bother on 78 for 5, but Nikhil Gangta scored a 27-ball 40 and put on a 47-run partnership with Rishi Dhawan, who remained unbeaten on 23 off 16 deliveries.Delhi’s chase barely hit a bump, as Pant and Gautam Gambhir, who made 30 not out off 33 balls, made it a thoroughly one-sided affair. Delhi’s victory, third third in four games, took them to the top of the north zone standings.

Another Everton Player Alongside Alex Iwobi Set To Leave

Everton are set to lose Alex Iwobi on deadline day to possible relegation rivals Fulham, and it now looks like he may not be the only first-team player on the way out.

What's the latest deadline day news?

Everton are trying desperately to sign Wilfried Gnonto from Leeds United to add to their succesful attacking signings of Beto and Arnaut Danjuma.

They are however set to lose a significant part of the first-team squad in the shape of Nigeria star Iwobi, who is closing in on a move to Fulham even despite their own sale of Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich collapsing, as per BBC.

And now, according to The Athletic's Patrick Boyland on Twitter, Neal Maupay is also set to join former club Brentford on loan:

"Everton's Neal Maupay close to returning to Brentford on loan w/ option to buy. Fabrizio Romano with the first call."

The report goes into the matter in a little more depth, with a permanent move in the offing for Maupay, should he impress back in west London:

"Everton striker Neal Maupay is close to re-joining Brentford on loan with an option to make the move permanent. Maupay is waiting for a green light from Everton before undergoing a medical with the London club.

"The 27-year-old has made three appearances this season, coming off the bench to provide an assist during Everton's 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup on Wednesday. The Frenchman is now nearing a return to Brentford who he played for in the Championship between 2017 and 2019."

Maupay's time in an Everton shirt has been miserable to date, with a huge lack of impact on show and supporters beginning to turn on him. He has scored just one goal in 32 appearances, which is a scarcely believable return for an established Premier League striker, and a number of big misses proved costly in the 1-0 defeat at home to Fulham on the opening weekend of the season.

The 27-year-old's struggles have meant that he has looked increasingly surplus to requirements at Goodison, especially with Beto arriving and already matching his teammate's tally, scoring on his debut away to Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday evening, as the Blues came from behind to win 2-1 in their EFL Cup second round clash.

Are Everton signing anyone?

Maupay moving on in the summer transfer window makes complete sense for all parties, bringing an end to what has largely been a disastrous spell at Everton.

It will potentially allow him more minutes at a club he knows well in Brentford, as they look the fill the void left by the suspended Ivan Toney, and it will allow the Blues to get rid of a player who was arguably starting to feel like a hindrance.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

At this point, it would be a surprise if Maupay ever played for the club again, with a permanent move away next summer making sense, even if the Bees aren't interested in snapping him up.

The Blues now though need to make sure they bring in some reinforcements with both Iwobi and Maupay on the way out, and it looks as though it's Gnonto or bust on that front, with a last bid set to be made tonight while fellow target Luis Sinisterra is edging closer to signing for Bournemouth.

Leeds: Farke could replace Rutter with 19 y/o sensation

Leeds United head into the first international break of the 2023/24 campaign with one Championship win under their belt after the first five matches.

Where are Leeds in the Championship table?

Daniel Farke's team are currently sitting 15th in the division with six points on the board and are already four points off the play-off places.

The Whites failed to win any of their first three games of the season as they held Cardiff and West Brom to draws and were beaten by Birmingham before their first win came against Ipswich in a 4-3 thriller.

Their most recent outing came last weekend as they were held to a 0-0 draw by newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday and the German head coach could use this international break to improve his team's goalscoring output with Georginio Rutter enduring an improved campaign, albeit still inconsistent.

How many goals has Georginio Rutter scored this season?

Farke could look to bolster his side's attack by ditching French forward Georginio Rutter, who has only scored once so far this term, and unearthing Mateo Joseph.

The former Hoffenheim prospect has plundered one strike in five appearances in all competitions, which includes four in the Championship, and endured a rough afternoon against Wednesday last weekend with his true inconsistencies laid bare.

As per Sofascore, the 21-year-old missed two 'big chances' in front of goal and only completed 67% of his attempted passes, whilst he also lost three of his four aerial duels throughout the match.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

Rutter's lack of potency in the final third cost Leeds all three points and that could convince Farke to hand a huge opportunity to Joseph, who has the potential to be a big upgrade on the misfiring Frenchman if he can translate his academy form to first-team level.

How many goals has Mateo Joseph scored?

The England U20 international enjoyed a terrific 2022/23 campaign as the Spanish-born sensation racked up 17 goals and two assists in 30 appearances in all competitions.

He made three substitute appearances for the senior squad in the Premier League but his most impressive return came at U21 level for the Whites.

Joseph produced an outstanding 16 goals and two assists in 21 Premier League 2 outings, including the play-offs, as he showcased his ability to be a prolific scorer at the top end of the pitch.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

The former Espanyol prodigy also captained the U21 side and scored once in three matches during the 2022/23 EFL Trophy campaign, which highlights the possible leadership qualities that the 19-year-old talent could bring to the team.

Rutter, meanwhile, has only scored 22 goals in 112 career games, at youth and senior level, and is yet to prove himself to be a reliable scorer.

Therefore, Joseph, whose finishing was once hailed as "top drawer" by U21 boss Michael Skubala, could come in as an upgrade on the ex-Bundsliga attacker for Farke if he can take his chance and replicate his sensational academy form.

CoA asks BCCI anti-corruption unit to investigate allegations against Shami

Shami’s wife Hasin Jahan has alleged that he claimed to have collected money sent to him by a UK national through a Pakistani woman in Dubai

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Mar-2018The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) supervising the BCCI has asked the board’s anti-corruption unit to investigate if Mohammed Shami collected money sent to him by a UK national through a Pakistani woman in Dubai. Shami’s wife Hasin Jahan had alleged that Shami made that claim when she confronted him and accused him of committing adultery. Jahan released an alleged recording of that telephonic conversation, and the CoA has taken note of it.Kolkata Police is currently looking into various criminal charges filed by Jahan against India fast bowler Shami and his family, including attempt to murder. Shami has rejected all the accusations and has pleaded with his wife to sort the issues out in private. A day after Jahan first made the allegations, the BCCI withheld Shami’s annual contract, choosing to wait for the police probe.Kolkata Police has been in touch with the BCCI, asking the board about Shami’s travel schedule after India’s recent tour of South Africa, and whether he extended his stay in Dubai, as alleged by his wife, while the rest of the team returned home. The CoA or the BCCI has not made any comment on the issue. However, the recording released by Jahan has led to the CoA calling for an internal probe. In the alleged audio tape, the person claimed to be Jahan is heard asking the person claimed to be Shami why he met someone referred to as Alisba in Dubai. Shami allegedly tells Jahan that he had to collect money from Alisba, money sent by a certain Mohammed Bhai from the UK.In a letter addressed to the head of the BCCI ACSU Neeraj Kumar, which ESPNcricinfo has accessed, the CoA has asked the board to submit a report “preferably” within a week. “The Committee of Administrators is concerned only with such portion of the said audio recording in which the person who it is claimed is Md. Shami is heard saying another person by the name of ‘Mohammad Bhai’ had sent money to Md. Shami through a Pakistani lady by the name of ‘Alisba’,” the letter said. The CoA has asked the board to investigate whether Mohammed Bhai and Alisba exist, if any money was sent to Shami, and, if it was indeed sent, why. “Please investigate the above assertions/allegations under the BCCI Anti-Corruption Code and submit a report to the Committee of Administrators with your findings as to whether there is any basis to proceed further in terms thereof. The investigation should cover (i) the identity and antecedents of “Mohammad Bhai” and “Alisba”; (ii) whether any money was in fact sent by the said Mohammad Bhai through the said Alisba to Md. Shami; and (iii) if yes, the purpose for which the said money was received by Md. Shami.”The CoA has asked the ACSU to restrict the investigation to what might fall under the BCCI’s anti-corruption code.

Southampton: Saints make move to sign 28 y/o free agent

Southampton have reportedly made a first move to sign an in-demand free agent for manager Russell Martin.

Who did Southampton sign this summer?

The Saints have had a busy few months both on and off the pitch following relegation from the Premier League to the Championship last season.

Martin came in as the club’s new manager and wasted no time in adding to the squad. At the end of the window, Southampton brought in a total of eight new players.

Shea Charles and Ross Stewart commanded relatively big fees for a second-tier side from Manchester City and Sunderland, whereas Ryan Manning and Joe Lumley arrived on free transfers.

Meanwhile, four Premier League players – Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Mason Holgate, Flynn Downes and Ryan Fraser – signed on loan from Manchester City, Everton, West Ham United and Newcastle United.

There were also a number of departures, with Southampton bringing in over £150m in player sales. The likes of Romeo Lavia, Tino Livramento, James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Tella, Mohammed Salisu, Moussa Djenepo and Mislav Orsic all made permanent exits.

Martin was looking forward to the prospect of focusing on football and not the transfer window, though, saying:

"The best bit of the job is when you get to work with the players on the grass. The fewer disruptions you have, the bigger the focus is from the players.

"I think as a club we’ve navigated through this window of change so well. But we will still improve and the window shutting will definitely help with that."

However, despite the window slamming shut at the beginning of the month, it looks as if the Saints are still looking at possibly adding to their squad in the free-agent market.

According to TEAMtalk, midfielder Xeka is attracting plenty of interest in England, with Southampton and Championship rivals West Brom making enquiries to the player’s agent.

Alongside the second-tier sides, Xeka is also being looked at by Everton, Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers as well as clubs in France, Italy, Spain and Turkey.

Who is Xeka?

Xeka is 28 years of age and can play as a central, holding or left midfielder, so would provide a versatile option at St Mary’s.

The Portuguese midfielder is valued at €6m by Transfermarkt and is best known for his time in France with Lille. He made 144 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, contributing to 16 goals, and has also represented the likes of Stade Rennes, Braga, Dijon and SC Covilha throughout his career.

Xeka has been without a club since the middle of August, and as per FBref, the player has been compared to former Saints midfielder Oriol Romeu, now with FC Barcelona, over the past 365 days.

He has ranked in the top 4% for pass completion, top 6% for blocks and top 8% for passes blocked, so he could prove to be a shrewd pick up for whatever club manages to secure his services, and by the looks of things, Southampton are trying to do just that.

Olivier, Morris added to South Africa Test squad

There is no room yet, however, for Dale Steyn, who has yet to play a competitive match since injuring his heel in January

Firdose Moonda18-Mar-2018Fast bowler Duanne Olivier and allrounder Chris Morris have been added to South Africa’s squad for the last two Tests against Australia but there was no room for Dale Steyn, who has yet to play a competitive match since injuring his heel in January. With Kagiso Rabada’s participation in the rest of the series hinging on whether he succeeds in his appeal against a Level 2 sanction on Monday, the selectors opted to boost the bowling resources in the squad.”Circumstances have forced us to name a large squad at this stage so that we can cover all possible options,” Linda Zondi, the convener of selectors, said. “We have retained the 15 players who produced an excellent performance to level the Test series in Port Elizabeth. Olivier was the pick of our bowlers for South Africa A in their tour match against Australia while Morris has been in excellent form in domestic cricket, taking four wickets in an innings and making more than 150 runs, including a century, for the Titans in the Sunfoil Series against the log-leading Warriors.”Neither Olivier nor Morris were named in the original squad. Olivier last played Test cricket against Bangladesh at the start of the summer, while Morris hasn’t played a Test match since July 2017 in England. Morris was part of the group that was named to play India, but did not play a Test match and coach Ottis Gibson said he felt Morris had “work to do” after the limited-overs matches. However, with South Africa needing players immediately, they don’t have time for that work to be done.It is also not guaranteed that either Olivier or Morris will play a Test, even if Rabada remains suspended. Morne Morkel, who did not play in Port Elizabeth, is likely to replace Rabada with Vernon Philander and Lungi Ngidi making up the rest of the pace attack.

Man United: Romano drops Ten Hag update with "alarm bells ringing"

To say that Manchester United have got off to a poor start in the Premier League this season would be an incredible understatement. Everything has gone wrong for Erik ten Hag following such an impactful debut campaign last time out.

Five games into the season, the Dutchman has had injuries to key players such as Luke Shaw, off-field disputes with the likes of Jadon Sancho, and the results to match what is going from a blip to a potential full-blown crisis at Old Trafford.

United have already lost three of their five games, and their victories have hardly been convincing either. And, with that said, Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update about the future of Ten Hag.

What has Fabrizio Romano said?

In the previous campaign, Ten Hag successfully took United into the Champions League places, and even picked up his first trophy for the club, defeating Newcastle United to win the Carabao Cup. So, fans at Old Trafford would be forgiven for thinking that the opening few weeks of his second season in charge would go slightly better than they have, especially after welcoming the likes of Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund.

It has been quite the opposite, however, placing pressure on the former Ajax manager to turn things around. Things didn't get much better against Brighton & Hove Albion, either, with United losing 3-1 against the Seagulls at home.

Speaking in his Caught Offside column after the defeat, Romano spoke about Ten Hag's future, saying: "The defeat at home to Brighton will obviously have alarm bells ringing with some fans, but my view is that Ten Hag did an excellent job last season because the situation he inherited was complicated.

“Now he needs some time and also to have some players back from injuries because there are many important players not available for different reasons. I’d say: keep calm, let Ten Hag work as he’s an excellent coach. No panic.”

Should Manchester United sack Erik ten Hag?

Just five games into the season, and with his squad facing plenty of issues, it would be a fairly harsh decision to sack Ten Hag. That said, he must turn things around at Old Trafford, after being backed so heavily in the summer transfer window.

It doesn't exactly get any easier for the manager, however. Quite the opposite, in fact. Up next, the Red Devils travel to Germany to face Bayern Munich in their first game of the Champions League group stage. With the pressure on against such a talented side, Ten Hag will be hoping to see his side get a surprise result and kickstart their season in the process.

If things take an even greater turn for the worse, though, then suddenly Romano's verdict of "no panic" may begin to fade away when it comes to those in charge of making the decisions at Old Trafford.

Of course, for now, patience is needed, but it will certainly be interesting to see how much time Ten Hag bought himself during last season's successful debut at Manchester United. A blip is quickly becoming a crisis, that's for sure.

Rangers: Beale made big blunder by loaning out £3m Dowell upgrade

Glasgow Rangers decided to part ways with English head coach Michael Beale earlier this month after his dismal start to the 2023/24 campaign.

The 43-year-old tactician lost three of his four Scottish Premiership matches and failed to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League with a 7-2 defeat to PSV on aggregate in their play-off clash.

Beale failed to win a single trophy throughout the 2022/23 season after he was brought in to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst during the break for the 2022 World Cup.

This led to an overhaul of the squad during the summer transfer window as the club allowed the ex-Gers assistant to revamp his options with a host of new additions.

Who did Rangers sign this summer?

Leon Balogun, Kieran Dowell, Jack Butland, Abdallah Sima, Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers, Danilo, Dujon Sterling, and Jose Cifuentes all came through the door, and this opened the door for a number of departures.

Glen Kamara, Fashion Sakala, Antonio Colak, and Ianis Hagi were all either sold or loaned out to make way for the new signings ahead of this season. That came after the likes of Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield, and Alfredo Morelos, among others, moved on at the end of their respective contracts.

However, Beale's transfer business did not have the desired effect and one move, in particular, that looks to have been a blunder was the decision to move Hagi out on loan.

Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi.

The Romania international returned to action earlier this year after 69 matches out with a knee injury, that was sustained at the start of 2022, and only started three Premiership matches last term before he was sent out to Alaves on a temporary basis.

Rangers, however, could have been better off if they had kept their faith in Hagi instead of swooping to sign Dowell from Norwich on a free transfer.

How has Dowell performed this season?

The former Everton youth prospect has produced one goal and zero chances created in six appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues since his move from the Canaries.

Dowell has been out injured since the 2-2 draw with PSV on the 22nd of August but failed to hit the ground running in Scotland prior to that knock.

Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell.

The 26-year-old maestro has played two Premiership matches for the Scottish giants so far and produced one goal and zero key passes in those games, along with a pass completion rate of just 71%.

Beale opted against starting him in any of the three Champions League qualifiers that he was available for selection for, which suggests that the English gem did not do enough to convince the head coach that he was ready to make an impact at that level.

How many goals did Dowell score last season?

The left-footed whiz arrived at Ibrox off the back of a five-goal season in the Championship with Norwich under Dean Smith and David Wagner during the 2022/23 campaign.

Dowell contributed with five goals and three assists in 23 league outings for the Canaries to go along with one key pass per game on average, as per Sofascore.

Former Norwich midfielder Kieran Dowell with Josh Sargent.

In total, the English midfielder scored 12 goals and assisted six in 75 matches for his former club in all competitions across three seasons at Carrow Road.

This means that he averaged a goal or an assist every 4.17 games for Norwich during his time in East Anglia, which shows that Dowell struggled to deliver quality at the top end of the pitch on a consistent basis.

How many goals has Hagi scored for Rangers?

Hagi, who was hailed as "impressive" by journalist Joshua Barrie earlier this year, has scored 16 goals in 99 matches in all competitions for the Light Blues since his £3m move to the club from Genk.

The versatile gem can play as an attacking or central midfielder as well as off the right as a winger, just like Dowell, and has the quality to chip in with goals and assists.

His horrific knee injury, which kept him out for 12 months, left him short of match fitness when he returned last season but his previous form for the Light Blues suggests that the potential is there for him to make a huge impact on the pitch.

During the 2020/21 campaign under Steven Gerrard, the Romanian wizard produced an outstanding seven goals and 11 assists in 23 Premiership starts. He also created six 'big chances' for his teammates and completed 82% of his attempted passes throughout the league season.

In total, Hagi has scored 16 and assisted 21 goals in his 99 games for the club and this means that he has averaged a contribution every 2.68 matches on average, which is significantly better than the aforementioned return that Dowell managed for Norwich.

How has Hagi performed this season?

The talented whiz, who is also two years younger than the current Gers midfielder, has created two 'big chances' and provided eight key passes in four La Liga starts for Alaves.

He has showcased his creative quality in the top-flight of Spanish football since leaving Ibrox on loan over the summer, whilst Dowell is yet to create a single chance in his six appearances for the club to date.

Hagi also provided supporters with a reminder of his talent with a stunning display for Romania against Andorra during the international break.

The 24-year-old magician is capable of producing magic moments with his ability to score and create goals from an attacking midfield position and has already proven himself at Premiership level for Rangers in the past.

Therefore, it was a big blunder by Beale to loan him out in favour of a deal to sign Dowell as the Gers could have been in a better position if they had stuck by the Romania international and helped him to rediscover his best form.

He is younger than the former Norwich man and boasted a better career record, in terms of goals and assists, than the left-footed gem prior to their respective moves over the summer.

New head coach Philippe Clement may want to reassess the situation in January and see if there is a possibility for Hagi to return to Ibrox in order to be given a chance to reignite his Rangers career under the Belgian boss.

Dominant South Africa complete 5-0 sweep

For the fifth time in as many matches, South Africa cantered to victory with the help of several performances all through their line-up

ESPNcricinfo staff14-May-2018Christopher Lee/ICC/Getty ImagesSouth Africa’s bowling prowess came to the fore once again as their new-ball tandem of Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp took five wickets for 38 runs in 19 overs between them in the fifth and final women’s ODI against Bangladesh. The duo’s parsimony enabled the home team to restrict Bangladesh to 166 for 9 in 50 overs, before opener Laura Wolvaardt’s unbeaten 70 took South Africa to their target in just 35 overs.Even though they played out 50 overs for the first time this series, Bangladesh’s innings was highlighted by two collapses, either side of a fourth and a fifth-wicket partnership. First, Kapp and Ismail reduced them to 23 for 3 after Bangladesh were put in to bat. Wicketkeeper-batsman Shamima Sultana, who opened the innings, held up her end and added 85 for the fourth wicket with her captain Rumana Ahmed. After the stand was broken, with the dismissal of Shamima for 53, Rumana added a further 48 with Nigar Sultana. By the time Rumana was dismissed, she had struck 74 – one run fewer than her highest international score – almost 50 percent of her team’s runs. Bangladesh then lost four wickets in their last two overs to end up with an underwhelming total. Ismail finished with 3 for 17 in nine overs, while Kapp took 2 for 21 in 10 overs.South Africa kept the heat on right through the chase, beginning with Lizelle Lee and Wolvaardt, who stitched together 79 for the first wicket. Wovaardt, however, lost her share of partners after the stand was broken. Trisha Chetty, who, earlier in the game became the first female wicketkeeper to accomplish 150 career dismissals, fell for a two-ball duck, while captain Dane van Niekerk was stumped for 29 on her 25th birthday. After offspinner Khadija Tul Kubra claimed her third wicket – she sent back Chloe Tryon for a run-a-ball nine – Wolvaardt ensured South Africa stayed the course. She finished not-out on 70 off 96 balls, collecting seven fours and a six along the way.
