Beckham, Owen to Sancho – Top 10 English players who went abroad

Goal takes a look at the best of English players who plied their trade outside England…

It has always been a rare sight to see English footballers plying their trade outside the Premier League.

There are hardly a few top players in every generation who receive offers from other top European leagues and move out of England to make a career.

A few of the prominent English players who decided to leave the Premier League at some point in their careers are David Beckham, Gary Lineker, Michael Owen and Paul Gascoigne.

Both Beckham and Owen played for Real Madrid in the mid-2000s. Beckham even played for AC Milan, LA Galaxy and PSG. Lineker and Gascoigne, on the other hand, played for FC Barcelona and Lazio.

Among the current crop of players, Jadon Sancho began his professional career with Borussia Dortmund before moving to Manchester United in the 2021/22 season. His former teammate Jude Bellingham is currently plying his trade with the Bundesliga side.

Titles: LaLiga (1), Supercopa de Espana (1), MLS Cup (2), Ligue 1 (1)

One of the greatest English footballers of all time, David Beckham joined Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2003 and played there for four seasons. In 2007, he moved to MLS side LA Galaxy where he spent the next five seasons of his career. In between, he had two short loan spells at AC Milan in 2009 and 2010. He finally ended his career in 2013 after spending six months at PSG.

Following his England teammate David Beckham's footsteps, Michael Owen joined Real Madrid in 2004, a year after Beckham's arrival at Los Blancos. Unfortunately his stay was shortlived. He was plagued with too many injuries and he left the club after just one season to return to England.

Gary Lineker

Overseas clubs: FC Barcelona, Nagoya Grampus

Trophies: European Cup Winners' Cup (1), Copa del Rey (1)

The former England international forward moved to Spain to join FC Barcelona from Everton in 1986 and played for three seasons at the club. After returning from Barcelona, he spent three years at Tottenham before ending his career at Japanese club Nagoya Grampus.

The English attacker joined Serie A side Lazio from Tottenham Hotspur in 1992 and played for three seasons before moving to Scotland and joining Rangers. Later in his career, he even played for Chinese club Gansu Tianma for a year in 1993.

Another penalty heartbreak to haunt England! Winners & losers as Kane's horrible miss sends France into World Cup semi-finals

The Spurs striker had the chance to force extra-time at the Al Bayt Stadium but France triumphed 2-1 thanks to his horrific miss.

It may not have been a shootout but it was still the same old story for England: more penalty pain.

What was remarkable about the Three Lions' latest spot-kick sorrow was that Harry Kane had actually converted one to level this enthralling World Cup quarter-final at the Al Bayt Stadium.

However, when the Spurs striker was given the chance to restore parity a second time, after Olivier Giroud had headed France into a 2-1 lead, Kane ballooned the ball over the bar, evoking memories of Chris Waddle at Italia '90.

This latest failure from 12 yards out will arguably hit even harder than that infamous loss to West Germany. England had been the better side after falling behind to Aurelien Tchouameni's stunning early strike from distance.

However, after Kane had seemingly broken the curse to join Wayne Rooney on 53 goals for England, it struck again with just six minutes of normal time remaining to leave a nation dealing with an all-too-familiar feeling of devastation.

Below, GOAL runs through all of the winners and losers from a bittersweet night for Kane in Al Khor…

GettyWinner: Antoine Griezmann

If this World Cup has proven nothing else, it's that Antoine Griezmann is an extraordinary footballer. It really is as simple as that. The former forward has reinvented himself as France's hybrid hero, an incredibly effective link-man between the attack and the midfield. England fans may disagree given his penchant for making tactical fouls, which earned him a yellow card, but Griezmann was the best player on the pitch at the Al Bayt. His pass accuracy during the first half was 96 per cent – an extraordinary success rate for a player playing in an offensive position. What was even more impressive was the fact that he didn't misplace a single pass in the final third during those opening 45 minutes, and one of those balls ended up at the feet of Tchouameni, who opened the scoring with a sweet strike from distance. Then, just as he had done against Denmark, Griezmann created a winning goal at a time when his side were struggling, this time picking out Giroud with a fantastic delivery from the left wing with that wonderful left foot. Still no goals for Griezmann at Qatar 2022 but that's no longer relevant. He's firmly established himself as France's most influential player.

AdvertisementGettyLoser: Harry Kane

On the eve of the game, Hugo Lloris was asked about the prospect of facing a Harry Kane penalty. It was suggested that he might benefit from a little inside knowledge, given he's squared off with the England striker in countless Tottenham training sessions. Lloris replied, "You know better than me that Harry has the ability to shoot anywhere. He's one of the best probably at this aspect of the game." Kane proved Lloris' point nine minutes into the second half, sending his Spurs team-mate the wrong way with an emphatic spot-kick to level the game. Mbappe had even tried to offer Lloris a word of advice – or perhaps, more accurately, psyche out Kane – but the No.9 would not be denied what was fourth consecutive successful penalty attempt at the World Cup. And, far more significantly, his record-equalling 53rd goal for England. However, when Kane was once again called upon with just six minutes of normal time remaining, he cleared the crossbar with an atrocious attempt. From history to horror in just half an hour for the England skipper.

GettyWinner: Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud was having a pretty horrid evening. His team may have been leading at the break but their No.9 had managed just seven touches in the opening 45 minutes. Then, when a big chance finally came his way in the final quarter of the game, he volleyed an Ousmane Dembele knockdown far too close to Jordan Pickford. However, Giroud, who didn't play top-flight football until he was 24, didn't make it to the pinnacle of his profession by allowing his head to drop. If at first you don't succeed and all that… Just moments after squandering a gilt-edged opportunity, Giroud cleverly moved in between England's two centre-halves to head home. It was fantastic centre-forward play and showed precisely why the 36-year-old is his nation's all-time record goalscorer. As he said himself afterwards, scoring a historic 52nd goal for France felt great, but his 53rd was even better. It's time to put a serious amount of respect of Olivier Giroud's name.

Getty ImagesLoser: Theo Hernandez

The luckiest man at the Al Bayt. France had just regained the lead. They were trying to kill the game yet their left-back gifted England a way back into it. There was absolutely no need for Theo to even touch Mason Mount as he hopefully chased a punt into the France area. The England sub wasn't going to get anywhere near the ball. Why on earth, then, did Theo feel compelled to clatter into Mount? Was it a show of machismo? Was he trying to prove a point? All we know for sure is that it was as unnecessary as it was stupid. Honestly, Hernandez didn't deserve to be let off the hook by Kane for the most idiotic of challenges. He remains an outstanding attacking full-back but he clearly still has a lot to learn about disciplined defending.

Different year, same story! Winners & Losers as PSG suffer more Champions League misery to cast doubt on Kylian Mbappe's future

PSG crumbled at the Allianz Arena, conceding two second-half goals while Kylian Mbappe watched on helpless from the other end of the pitch.

Why should Kylian Mbappe stay now? On Wednesday's evidence, there's not much to keep the France star at Paris Saint-Germain next year.

The Parisians never really found a foothold in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich, exiting the competition with a whimper as the far more collected Bavarians strolled to a comfortable 2-0 home win, and 3-0 aggregate victory.

Needing to beat Bayern at the Allianz Arena, PSG had some ideas in the first half, and created the best opportunity of the opening period. Vitinha should have handed his team the lead after being gifted the ball inside the box with an open goal gaping, but Matthijs De Ligt slid in to clear the ball off the line.

Bayern built on the solid first half and enjoyed a far more clinical second. They found the opener after 61 minutes, with Leon Goretzka stripping Marco Verratti inside the PSG box before feeding a wide open Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who couldn't miss from close range.

The home side saw off a series of tepid PSG attacks before adding a second in stoppage time, as Serge Gnabry added the finishing touch to a fluid counter-attack.

And that was all Bayern needed. PSG were lifeless and short of ideas, losing in the last 16 for the fifth time in the last seven years.

This was their tryout to keep their star player, who could force a move this summer or next. After this loss, it's hard to think of a reason for Mbappe to stick around.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Allianz Arena…

GettyWINNER: Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

How does one go from being relegated with Stoke to turning in a more impactful showing than Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in a Champions League knockout win? It's certainly not a path well-trodden.

The Choupo-Moting case is a curious one. But he's quietly become a handy striker this year. And he was at it again here.

His goal wasn't a particularly complicated one – a side-footed finish into an open goal. It rippled the net nonetheless and effectively sealed his side's place in the last eight.

His influence expanded beyond his composure in front of goal, though. Choupo-Moting was a real handful throughout, offering a clear out ball for when Bayern needed to play long. He was unafraid to compete with Sergio Ramos in the air – and often came out on top.

He exited the game after 68 minutes, with the pacier Leroy Sane entering the fold. Still, Choupo-Moting strolled to the bench knowing he had done exactly what had been asked of him.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: PSG's hopes of keeping Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe stuck around for THIS?!

When the French striker penned a massive contract prior to the 2022-23 season, he did so on the promise of Champions League glory. With Mbappe at the helm and Lionel Messi and Neymar half a rung below him, the Parisians were supposed to mount a serious European challenge.

And after a gargantuan salary, unprecedented player power and a series of shrewd signings, this is the best PSG could do.

They were, perhaps, unfortunate to come up against a Bayern side just rounding into form. The Bavarians were excellent on Wednesday, defending diligently and picking their moments to go for it in attack.

But PSG are supposed to offer counterpunches, and deal with the top teams. Instead, they were outclassed.

A lot of the talk leading up to the game was centered around how Bayern could stop Mbappe. In the end, there wasn't much to stop. But as the star man fed off scraps all evening, it's hard to pin any blame on him.

GettyWINNER: Julian Nagelsmann

Here was a battle of two managers on opposing trajectories.

One looked composed, tactically astute and in control.

The other was Christophe Galtier.

Nagelsmann managed Bayern with aplomb on Wednesday, setting up his team perfectly to ease to a classy win. He ensured that Mbappe was never left one-on-one, and clearly told his team to swarm Messi every time he was on the ball.

And it all worked swimmingly. PSG never drummed anything up in the attacking third, their best efforts coming off one fluke giveaway and a couple of Sergio Ramos headers.

At the other end, Bayern were simply more incisive. The first goal was the result of a well-executed press, with Goretzka dispossessing the usually steady Verratti. And the second came from a well-worked break, Bayern simply sauntering down the pitch to put away their opposition for good.

It is unclear how far the Bavarians will go in the competition; PSG simply aren't among the competition's elite anymore.

But Nagelsmann is a shrewd coach leading a well-drilled team. And that should be enough to facilitate a run. Regardless of how far they go, there's clearly something to work with here, too.

GettyLOSER: Christophe Galtier

Every PSG manager is judged by their ability to win in Europe.

Coaches have been brought in because they've succeeded at it, and fired when they fail. It's what's seen managers such Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel hired and then spat out of the PSG machine.

And it now seems like Galtier will be the next victim. It's tricky to pin this defeat on the manager. He set up his team with a solid base and tried to get the most out of his big hitters. For the most part, he put the right players, in the right positions, in the best system.

But he was simply outcoached by a more tactically proficient and versatile side. Can he really be faulted for that?

Chances are, PSG will find a way to blame him – and probably ship him out. Galtier is a good manager who will win PSG Ligue 1 with some ease.

But he wasn't hired for domestic success. The remit of his job was to win games like this. And with this defeat, it's hard to see a world in which he's still standing on the Parc des Princes sideline next year.

The hosts head into this fixture on the back of a disappointing 4-2 loss to Swansea City, which was their second successive loss in the league.

Ryan Lowe's men were 3-0 down at the break but courtesy of goals from Thomas Cannon and Troy Parrott they were staging a comeback but Joel Piroe's brace dashed their hopes. Preston are still in the 11th Championship but find themselves just two points behind Rovers who are in the sixth position. Hence, a win on Saturday could change the dynamics for them.

Meanwhile, Rovers were held to a 1-1 draw against Coventry. Just when it seemed that Sam Gallagher's first-half strike was enough to hand them the three points, Ben Wilson bagged a stoppage-time equaliser which forced them to share the spoils. This was their third successive draw in the Championship and they should be desperate to get back to winning ways.

Championship play-offs: Everything you need to know

Manchester United most expensive signings: How Red Devils splashed over £2 billion on incoming transfers

Just how much have Manchester United spent on transfers this century? A lot!

Manchester United are one of the most decorated clubs in the history of English football.

The Red Devils have won more major trophies than any other English club and have clinched the most Premier League/English top division titles.

A major chunk of their successes came in the last three decades and mostly during the era of their legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who guided the team to multiple titles, including 13 Premier League, two Champions League, five FA Cups and four League Cups among many others

However, the Red Devils' success has come at a price as they have spent more than £2 billion in the 21st century years on player signings.

Just at the turn of the century, United spent £41.4m to sign Rio Ferdinand, which was the club's record signing until Angel Di Maria joined in 2014 for £ 67.5m from Real Madrid.

But most of their big spending came in the last decade when cash started flowing out of Old Trafford at an increasingly high pace. The likes of Antony, Casemiro, Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho joined the club in the last 10 years for mammoth transfer fees.

Manchester United's top 10 most expensive signingsGetty Images10Anthony Martial | £54 million | AS Monaco | 2015

The former Golden Boy award winner joined the Premier League giants in 2015 from AS Monaco for a record £54 million fee, making him the most expensive teenager ever.

Unfortunately, Martial’s career graph went downhill in the last seven years as he failed to live up to the high epxectations, despite scoring over 75 goals and making over 260 appearances for the Red Devils.

In January 2022, Martial was sent out on loan to Sevilla in an attempt to revive his career.

AdvertisementGetty Images9Bruno Fernandes | £56.7 million | Sporting Lisbon | 2019

The Portuguese talisman was signed by Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in the January transfer window of the 2019-20 season.

In Portugal, Bruno Fernandes had won the league title twice and the Taca de Portugal once with Sporting. He was also the club’s Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019.

Since joining Manchester United, he has become one of the club’s most important players, making over 125 appearances so far and becoming one of the club's main sources for goals and assists.

(C)GettyImages8Mason Mount | £60 million | Chelsea | 2023

Mount was supposed to be Mr. Chelsea. Frank Lampard's protégé joined the Blues' academy ranks as a six-year-old way back in 2005, and graduated into the first team squad 12 years later with bags of potential and enthusiasm.

After successful loan spells at Vitesse and Derby County, he made his breakthrough at Stamford Bridge in 2019-20 under Lampard, and quickly became a key player.

But Mount fell out of favour somewhat during the 2022-23 campaign and Manchester United made their move after it became clear the England international would not be signing a contract renewal at Stamford Bridge, beating Liverpool to the midfielder's signature.

Getty7Casemiro | £63.6 million | Real Madrid | 2022

United spent most of the summer of 2022 chasing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, but eventually switched their interest to Casemiro after it became clear the Dutchman had no intention of moving to Old Trafford.

Casemiro on the other hand was keen on a new challenge after absolutely dominating Europe with Real Madrid during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Man Utd ended up paying over £60 million on the holding midfielder, which seems like a lot for a 30-year-old, but quality comes at a price.

Casemiro is arguably one of the best in the world in his position and adds some much-needed grit and determination to the United midfield.

Arda Guler: Why Real Madrid are spending at least €20m on the 'Turkish Messi'

The 18-year-old has signed a six-year deal with Los Blancos after turning heads across the continent during a breakout season for Fenerbahce

Being compared to Lionel Messi is a rite of passage for any attacking wonderkid, and Arda Guler is no different. The diminutive forward attracted plenty of attention from some of Europe's biggest clubs this summer having been excitingly dubbed 'The Turkish Messi' some time ago.

Fenerbahce were eager to keep Guler around as they look to close the gap on Galatasaray at the top of the Super Lig next season, but the writing was already on the wall. Interest in the 18-year-old came from far and wide, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund just some of the clubs in the running.

In the end, Los Blancos have triumphed, with the Spanish giants beating everyone else to his signature, doing so by committing to pay in excess of release clause by agreeing an initial €20 million (£17m/$22m) fee, with a potential €10m (£8.5m/$11m) more due in add-ons.

So is the hype justified? Or is Guler condemned to join the likes of Ryan Gauld, Amir Sayoud and Alen Halilovic as players who could not live up to high expectations after being touted as Messi's successor on the global stage?

Below, GOAL takes an intimate look at why theNXGN Nine 2023 inductee is such an exciting prospect…

Getty ImagesWhere it all began

Guler was given little choice in becoming a footballer by his father, Umit. In an interview with GOAL back in 2022, he revealed the novel method he used to encourage his son to take up the game. "We did not have any left-footers in our family," he explained. "I put balloons and footballs in front of his left foot so he would use it more."

It only took until his second year of primary school to realise that Guler might have serious talent. During that time, his PE teacher encouraged him to join the youth academy of Genclerbirligi – a team based in Ankara. "Genclerbirligi's training facilities were very far from our home," Umit recalled. "We took Arda there with his teacher’s insistence, and he managed to show off his talents in the first training session. They put him in their team immediately!"

Guler was eventually spotted by Turkish giants Fenerbahce at an Under-14 tournament, where he impressed by battling through an ankle injury. After some deliberation by the club, an offer eventually came and he and his family made the near-500 kilometre move to Istanbul in 2019. It was a huge moment for Guler, who had grown up as a Fenerbahce fan idolising club legend Alex de Souza.

The pandemic disrupted his development slightly, but he refused to let the situation knock him completely off track. Once football resumed, he began impressing for the U17s and the U19s. He managed 10 goals and seven assists in just 22 appearances for the latter, and was rewarded with his maiden professional contract in January 2021.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe big break

Fenerbahce boss Vitor Pereira had taken note of Guler's meteoric rise through the age groups and he was called up to train for the first team halfway through the 2020-21 campaign. He had to be patient for his big break, though, only making his debut at the beginning of the following season, when he came on as a substitute during a Europa League qualifying bout against HJK Helsinki.

Just three days later, he fully marked his arrival as a future superstar. Again, he was introduced off the bench with Fenerbahce drawing 0-0 against Antalyaspor. With victory anything but certain, Guler popped up with a vital assist, using his body well to maneuver the ball over to Miha Zajc, who finished superbly from outside the box.

This could have been the start of a extended run in the first team, but Pereira had other ideas. Eventually though, Guler became impossible to ignore for the Portuguese's interim replacement, Ismail Kartal. The turning point came against Alanyaspor, played shortly after he managed assists in both Europa Conference League play-off legs against Slavia Prague.

Following a familiar theme, he was introduced with Fenerbahce heading for a draw. Guler was the game-changer, meeting Diego Rossi's back-post header perfectly with a side-footed volley to put his team 3-2 up. The strike made him the youngest scorer in the club's history. That wasn't his only contribution either. After Dimitrios Pelkas had put the game beyond Antalyaspor, Guler provided an assist for Mergim Berisha to add some gloss to the scoreline.

Following this superb cameo, he would never spend as long out of the first-team picture again, and finished the season by adding two more goals and an assist in a string of other impressive Super Lig substitute appearances.

Getty ImagesHow it's going

Last season, Guler built on his excellent end to the 2021-22 campaign. In the summer, he was handed the No.10 shirt previously worn by his idol, Alex, as well as Mesut Ozil, Robin van Persie and Tuncay Sanli. His involvement with the U19 team also stopped, though his breakthrough as a first-team regular under new manager Jorge Jesus would not come until the second half of the season.

This was a bit of a surprise considering he grabbed a brace from the bench in his first league appearance of the season – a 6-0 demolition of Kasimpasa. Eventually though, following significant criticism on social media, his manager relented.

He was handed a start in a 5-1 thrashing of Kasimpasa in January and slowly worked his way into Jesus' plans, thanks in part to the coach doing away with a three-at-the-back system he had flirted with at the beginning of the season. His call-up to the Turkey senior squad a few months earlier likely played a role in Jesus bringing him into the fold, too.

Following this breakthrough, Guler was instrumental in helping Fenerbahce lift the Turkish Cup – the club's first silverware since 2014. He started the final and laid on a gorgeous assist for Michy Batshuayi's first goal in a 2-0 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir.

Guler then capped off a fine season with his maiden Turkey goal against Wales. It was a spectacular strike, with the youngster bending an unstoppable effort past a stricken Danny Ward. It would have left the long list of clubs tracking him absolutely purring.

Getty ImagesBiggest strengths

Guler is still only 18, but he has already played in a host of different positions for club and country. The majority of his minutes have come either in a right-forward or attacking-midfield berth, but he has also popped up on the left and even as a striker.

Regardless of where he is playing, Guler will tend to gravitate towards the right half-space. From here, he wreaks havoc, either carrying the ball past his opponents or laying on chances for his team-mates. The are several reasons why he is so effective in this area. Firstly, he has a low centre of gravity, with this agility allowing him to twist and turn devilishly. Combine this with his precise ball control and it can take some effort to dispossess the Turkey international when he is full flow. His flair helps as well. While not being overly flashy, Guler is not afraid to try the audacious to keep hold of possession.

Once he's created space for himself, his vision and passing technique come into play. He loves playing through balls to on-rushing strikers, as we saw in the Turkish Cup final last season. If he finds himself on the left, he can often resemble an old-fashion winger, getting to the byline before swinging in a wicked cross. An aerially dominant striker will very much enjoy playing with Guler. Despite his young age, he rarely makes incorrect decisions in the final third.

He also possesses a goalscoring threat, which is likely to develop over the coming years. Like many modern forwards, Guler is constantly looking to cut inside onto his dominant foot, as his splendid goal against Wales recently demonstrated.

He's a set piece demon too, capable of swinging corners in with pace and dip to either post.

Not good enough for Arsenal? Time for a change? Transfer questions USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner must answer in 2023

Matt Turner has only spent 12 months at Arsenal, taking in seven appearances, but is it already time for the USMNT star to be considering a transfer?

The United States international completed a move to Emirates Stadium from MLS side the New England Revolution that had been agreed a few months earlier during the summer window of 2022. He knew what he was letting himself in for with Aaron Ramsdale already the established No.1 in north London.

Turner was, however, to take in just seven appearances during his debut campaign with the Gunners – with none of those coming in the Premier League. He has continued to be selected by his country, but needs more regular game time at club level.

Exit talk has been sparked in 2023, with GOAL quizzing former Arsenal star Ray Parlour on whether Turner was ever the right option, what the future could hold for him and whether Ramsdale will continue to see off competition to his place in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

GettyGood enough?

Quizzed by GOAL on whether Turner is good enough for a club of Arsenal’s stature and ambition, Parlour – speaking in association with – said, with the Gunners already being linked with another keeper: “I’ve seen the reports with David Raya at Brentford. You always need good goalkeepers. If you are going to have any chance of being successful, you need to have that. Maybe they have thought ‘is he up to the standard?’ I haven’t seen a lot of him, but Raya I’ve seen a lot of and he’s decent. Whether that deal is going to happen, we have to wait and see. You have then got two good goalkeepers. If there is then a problem with Ramsdale going forward, you have got no problems whatsoever bringing Raya into the team. I do believe that you need two top class keepers because if one gets an injury – it’s like losing your striker. Maybe that’s what they are looking at. It might up Ramsdale’s game a little because he knows he has competition around him.”

Pressed on whether Turner may have been signed by Arsenal as much for his links to the lucrative American market as his ability between the sticks, Parlour said: “He’s a decent keeper, there is no doubt about that. But if you want to try and win leagues, sometimes you need that little bit extra. Whether he has got that… Of course it’s great for the American market that he has come to England and playing, but it’s all about ability in the end. He might just be lacking a little bit. I don’t see him day to day but the coaches will be chatting with Mikel Arteta – they see him every day, and will be saying if he’s good enough. If he is called upon then he’ll do the best he can, but whether that is good enough to win your leagues and trophies is another matter. That is maybe why they are looking at other keepers.”

GettyTime for a change

The good will that has been afforded to Turner by the USMNT will not last forever, with Parlour saying when asked if the 29-year-old now needs a move as much for his international ambitions as domestic ones – with Nottingham Forest reported to have expressed interest: “You want to be playing. You probably get into the team at 18, 19 and you have got probably 16 years – 35/36 is probably the average age where people retire. You don’t want to be sitting on the bench every week, and at the moment he will be. I like that in a player. He wants to go out and play. You have got to keep your eye in. You can train as much as you like, but it’s not like game situations. Where is he going to play football? That is one reason why he might say to Arteta ‘look, I want to go out and play now’. If he does that, then players have all the power now and they can do that.”

GettyColourful character

Turner has been forced to play second fiddle to Ramsdale at Arsenal, with the England international silencing critics that questioned his £24 million ($31m) fee when arriving from Sheffield United in 2021 with back-to-back relegations out of the Premier League under his belt. Parlour said when asked for his take on the enigmatic 25-year-old: “He’s done brilliantly. What I like about him is his character as well. He’s brilliant for the dressing room, which is so important. It’s not all about ability sometimes. He has got plenty of ability, but you have to look at the character as well and what he can bring to the dressing room. I think he has been excellent. He made some great saves last season in important games. He’s going to make a mistake here and there, all keepers do that, but most of the time he has kept Arsenal in it when he has to – concentration levels have been very good. He’s been a great signing. There were a few people who said ‘is he worth that?’ I spoke to Dave Seaman, who goes into training, and he says he’s a great character and an excellent goalkeeper. If Dave Seaman says that, I’m very happy.”

The Bianconeri are looking to strengthen in midfield and reports that the 28-year-old's representative travelled to Turin for talks with sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli. The Serie A side have long been linked with the Denmark international and he has also been on Roma's radar recently.

Hojbjerg could come in to replace Paul Pogba in the Juve midfield after the Frenchman was provisionally suspended after a drug test showed elevated levels of testosterone, leaving the club considering terminating his contract.

Ex-Southampton star Hojbjerg is open to a change of scenery as his place in the Spurs squad has been diminished since Ange Postecoglou's arrival. He has been limited to less than 80 minutes of playing time spread out across five Premier League games this season.

AND WHAT'S MORE

The financial aspect of the deal is the biggest obstacle for Juventus, given Spurs are said to want around €30 million (£26m/$32m) for Hojbjerg. With his contract set to expire in 2025, however, Juve are considering an attempt to bring him in on loan from January until the end of the season with the hope they can get him for a lower price in the summer.
