'Always been interested in working with young players' – Dravid

Rahul Dravid, who has agreed to coach the India Under-19 and A teams, has said that he has always been interested in working with the next generation of cricketers

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Jun-2015Rahul Dravid, who has agreed to coach the India Under-19 and A teams, has said that he has always been interested in working with the next generation of cricketers. Dravid added that he did not see the position as a “stepping stone” for the coaching job of the senior national team.”I think it is really exciting because it has been an area I have always been interested in,” Dravid told ESPNcricinfo. “I feel it is a very important stage of development of a lot of cricketers, having been through myself, and I am just hoping that having experienced being on A tours and being with an Indian Under-19 team, I will probably be able to help some of these young cricketers on their journey.”I don’t see this as any stepping stone, I just see this as an opportunity to work with young players over the next few months, six weeks of an A tour and may be six or seven weeks, with the Under-19 team. This is all I see it as.”More than anything this is something that really interests me, working hands on with young talent and obviously the fact that it is not as encompassing as say a national coach’s job is. It makes it a really good fit for me.”Dravid said he would draw assistance from the experience of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who constitute the advisory committee of the BCCI.”I have put forward what I think might be the best structure to help the A team and the Under-19 team and in the end help the player and give them the best environment and best opportunity that gives them the best chance to be able to put in performances that help their future, their careers and bring on the next generation of young Indian cricketers.”(Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman) are going to be around. We are definitely going to dip into their vast knowledge and experiences at various stages.”Dravid also hoped to work with Ravi Shastri, who will continue as India’s team director for the Bangladesh tour, and other support staff to ensure a steady supply of talent to the national team.”I hope to be able to work closely with Ravi [Shastri], his support staff and the national selectors and just to find out from them what they see as the next generation of cricketers coming through and what they see as kind of cricketers they would want coming through to help the Indian team get stronger because at the end of the day a lot of this is really about helping the Indian team get better. A lot of this is about working with people, domestic and Ranji Trophy coaches to help build the next generation of good young Indian cricketers.”

Surujbally replaces Steven Taylor in USA squad

Miami batsman Timothy Surujbally has been named as a replacement for Steven Taylor in USA’s 15-man squad for the World T20 Qualifier in Ireland next month

Peter Della Penna26-Jun-2015Miami batsman Timothy Surujbally has been named as a replacement for Steven Taylor in USA’s 15-man squad for the World T20 Qualifiers in Ireland next month.USA Cricket Association officials confirmed the decision on Friday after a chaotic few days in which Taylor, at one point, appeared he might rejoin the squad. Taylor initially withdrew himself from the USA squad on Monday after securing a full-season contract with Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League. According to USACA sources though, Taylor contacted USACA on Wednesday night after having second thoughts and apparently sought out info on whether it was possible to rejoin the squad.By this time, USACA had already sent a notification to the ICC seeking a replacement for Taylor. The 21-year-old batsman also apparently had a meeting with USACA president Gladstone Dainty, who was in Barbados to attend the ICC annual conference, on Thursday to discuss his status with the team. ESPNcricinfo contacted Taylor on Thursday to confirm his intentions to rejoin the USA squad but did not receive a response. However, a USACA official told ESPNcricinfo on Friday morning that Taylor had made the decision to stay with the Tridents for the duration the CPL, at which point Surujbally was formally added to the USA squad.Surujbally made his debut for USA during the 2012 Auty Cup series in Florida and has played 8 T20 matches for USA, the last of which came during the 2013 Auty Cup tour to Canada. He has scored 140 runs at an average of 20 in T20s, with a highest score of 44 against Suriname in March 2013 at the ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament in Florida. He last represented USA later that year in the Auty Cup tour to Canada in July.

On the second and last ball of the tenth over, she got the huge wickets of Ellyse Perry and Meg Lanning, both of whom were stumped. She followed that up by sending back Alex Blackwell and Alyssa Healy on the first and fifth ball of the 12th over; and by the end of the next over, Australia were 71 for 6. Jess Jonassen then came in and scored 17 to push the visitors towards 100, but fell with the score at 95. Australia eventually made it to 113 for 7 thanks to Erin Osborne’s unbeaten 17 at No. 8.Captain Suzie Bates gave the hosts a strong start in their chase with a quick 33. The support roles were played by Sara McGlashan and Amy Satterthwaite, both of whom scored 22. Despite Australia’s timely strikes, Bates and McGlashan’s brisk scoring always kept New Zealand ahead in the chase. Katey Martin sealed the win in 18.3 overs after her side had lost Bates, McGlashan and Satterthwaite by the 17th over.

Powell set for return to West Indies first-class cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Mar-2016Opening batsman Kieran Powell looks set for a return to West Indies’ first-class cricket competition after a gap of almost two years, after he was picked in Leeward Islands’ 13-man squad for the Regional 4-day tournament match against Guyana, which starts from March 11.Powell last played a first-class match for Leeward Islands in April 2014. He went on to play the Kingston Test against New Zealand in June 2014 but has been out of the West Indies squad since then. In February-March 2015, he played four first-class matches for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club in Sri Lanka’s first-class Premier League Tournament. In January 2015, Powell issued a statement saying that mixed signals from West Indies cricket authorities had left him “deflated and confused” as he attempted to return to international cricket after a self-imposed break for the game. This resulted in his decision to step away from the game for some time. In January 2016, he tried his hand at baseball, without much success.Leeward Island Cricket Association chief executive, Richard Berridge, told that Powell had said that he was mentally prepared to return to first-class cricket.”Kieran was always going to come back to cricket. I don’t know the exact details but what I do know is that he made himself available to us,” Berridge said. “He said he was ready – mentally ready to return to the game – and therefore the selection panel chose to include him in the squad for the ninth round.”For the Leeward Islands Cricket Board it is certainly positive news. As you know, Kieran has played 21 Test matches already for West Indies, he’s scored three Test hundreds and he is also a past captain of our team, so a player of that caliber we’re always happy to welcome back into the fold.”He will have to perform, just like anyone else. I think he would be recalled [to West Indies] if he performs. I know there are only two matches left in the four-day season. However, it is a start and we really hope he builds from strength to strength.”Powell has played 21 Tests for West Indies since his debut against India in July 2011, scoring 1072 runs, including three centuries and two fifties. He scored centuries in each innings of a Test against Bangladesh in November 2012, having scored his maiden hundred against New Zealand in July that year. In 68 first-class matches he has scored 3973 runs with six centuries and 21 fifties.

Bangalore likely to host IPL 2016 final

Rajiv Shukla, the IPL chairman, has recommended to the IPL governing council that the final of the tournament be held in Bangalore

Agarkar: Venue change a blow for Mumbai Indians

Bangalore is likely to host the IPL final after the fixture had to be moved from Mumbai following the Bombay High Court’s ruling to shift all IPL matches after April 30 out of Maharashtra because of severe drought. Kolkata is in line to stage the Eliminator and the second Qualifier, both originally scheduled in Pune. The proposed changes were arrived at after IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla met officials from the Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants in Delhi and need to be ratified by the league’s governing council.Shukla said Supergiants had listed Visakhapatnam as their alternative to Pune, though the franchise requested they play their May 1 match in Pune because of a short turnaround; Supergiants also play at home on April 29.Mumbai will decide their alternative venue on Sunday; their options are Jaipur, Raipur and Kanpur.”After speaking to the franchises, we have given them four options: Raipur, Jaipur, Kanpur and Visakhapatnam. Mumbai Indians have asked for time till day after tomorrow,” Shukla said. “Pune has given Visakhapatnam as its preference. We will put the proposal of Pune team before the governing council.”

Has Solskjaer done enough to prove he should be Man Utd manager?

The temporary boss has propelled the Red Devils into top-four contention and progressed to the Champions League last eight but will it be enough?

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became Manchester United’s caretaker-manager on December 19, he was given six months to make a case for the right to be Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor.

A little over halfway into the temporary job, Solskjaer has worked wonders to this point but has yet to be confirmed as the long-term United boss, with executive vice-chair Ed Woodward and the United board yet to make a final decision on who will take charge in 2019-20.

With a number of criteria to fulfil, the Norwegian has excelled in some but how has he performed across the board so far?

Goal takes a look at how he has managed to impact Manchester United to date.

Julian FinneyResults

Fourteen wins in 19 ensures an immediate pass mark in this category, even if that comes with the qualifier that things were looking even more impressive until defeats to Arsenal and Wolves in their last two fixtures.

The FA Cup exit will have hurt Solskjaer more than it might have stung some of his predecessors, so intent has he been on hunting down silverware above and beyond any other targets.

However, his excellent return across the three months he has been in charge has put United in far better shape than they were in in December.

Back in with a shout of a top-four finish in the Premier League and looking ahead to a Champions League clash with Barcelona, United are a world away from the train wreck Jose Mourinho left behind.

Indeed, the Portuguese claimed shortly before his dismissal that it would be “almost a miracle” for them to get back into the top four yet here they are, in fifth place, just two points behind Arsenal and with eight games still to play.

AdvertisementGettyTactics

The Norwegian has brought a real Manchester United edge back to his team’s play, with the greater urgency injected into their football resulting in greater rewards.

He has not changed their shape too dramatically, alternating primarily between the 4-3-3 employed by Mourinho in the second half of his reign and a diamond midfield which has similarly promoted a more dynamic style of play.

His greatest success has been in getting better performances out of Paul Pogba, with the Frenchman revelling in the opportunity to play with greater freedom thanks to the deployment of Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera in clearer roles than was once the case.

It has also been to Pogba’s – and United’s – advantage that the forward players have been encouraged to ask more questions of opposition defenders, with bigger spaces opening up for the World Cup winner to exploit as a result of a more energetic attack and a higher pressing game off the ball.

Also, the victory at Tottenham early in Solskjaer’s reign was achieved thanks in large part to the decision to pick Marcus Rashford on the right of attack rather than through the middle, with Jesse Lingard being asked to act as a conduit between the midfield and the forward line in the centre of the pitch.

That success was just one of a number of examples of Solskjaer making slight alterations, and he has often made in-game changes which have addressed issues when things haven’t quite gone to plan, such as switching to a back three away to Arsenal in order to regain a foothold in the game after some early struggles.Getty ImagesPlayers' Form

Not only has Pogba become an entirely different player under Solskjaer, but the likes of Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial have also excelled since the change of management.

Rashford was actually starting to find his stride towards the end of Mourinho’s time in charge, but he has reached a new level under Ole.

A run of 10 goals in 21 games, including eight in 18 since Solskjaer came in, marks his greatest streak of scoring form at first-team level, and his composure in front of goal has reached heights that he barely seemed capable of troubling during some of his more profligate moments of seasons gone by.

Shaw has clearly benefitted from the new levels of attacking freedom allowed by the caretaker-manager, and the departure of a man who publicly undermined him so relentlessly can surely only have helped his development too.

Martial may not have delivered the goals return of some of the other forwards, but he has looked a much greater threat when given licence to attack space.

Victor Lindelof has also gone from strength to strength, while even Romelu Lukaku has rediscovered his scoring touch despite going through a period during which he was basically asked to play the role of super-sub.

The main concern in this area right now is Alexis Sanchez, with the Chilean still dropping way short of the performances he delivered in the colours of Arsenal, Barcelona and Udinese.

His latest injury setback has hardly helped his cause and it is he who provides Solskjaer with his biggest question mark at this point, even if the boss has left it on the player’s shoulders to find a long-term solution.

“I can’t do anything about Alexis Sanchez. When he plays he needs to find himself, because we know there is a quality player there,” said Solskjaer in February.

It took Lukaku only two minutes to score after coming on against Bournemouth in Solskjaer’s third game in charge, and when he netted within a minute of entering the following match at Newcastle to break the deadlock, it looked as though the caretaker had a golden touch.

But it hasn’t been plain sailing in this regard since then, even if some of his decisions of late have been conditioned by a mounting injury list which has left him dipping into the academy ranks.

In the home leg against Paris Saint-Germain it took him until six minutes from time to release Lukaku into the game, leaving the Belgian with little chance to affect the 0-2 scoreline, while in the recent FA Cup reverse to Wolves, Solskjaer failed to make a move until after an opening Wolves goal which had been coming for some time.

He also left it until the last five minutes to throw in Juan Mata and Scott McTominay rather than looking to change his side’s fortunes immediately after falling two goals behind.

For the most part he has proved adaptable, though, and his great relationship with his coaching staff has helped to bring about considered changes at crucial times in other games.

He encourages input from Mike Phelan, Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna at all times, ensuring that while he makes the final call, there is always group input into any switch made during matches.

Brazil's World Cup Xl battles: Raphinha, Vinicius Jr, Gabriel Jesus & the big battle to play alongside Neymar

Brazil boast some of the best players in the world, but not all of them can start in Qatar.

The Selecao are always well-stocked with talented forwards. From Pele to Rivaldo to Ronaldo, the yellow and green colours are synonymous with incredible attacking football – a daunting standard for their current generation to meet.

Tite's 2022 group are fearsome in their own right, but the manager must make difficult choices to get the most out of them. Everyone knows Neymar is going to start. Will he be joined by Antony, Raphinha, Vinicius Junior or a combination of those options?

There is also an overflow of quality in defence and midfield, which Tite must sort through over the next two months as he crafts his preferred XI.

Here is the latest on Brazil's most interesting starting line-up battles as of the start of the September international break, including the three-way fight to play alongside Neymar…

Getty ImagesAlisson vs Ederson

Tite can be confident in either Liverpool’s Alisson or Manchester City’s Ederson, two goalkeepers in their primes who play for elite clubs and have experience in some of the biggest matches of the past decade.

They split duties at last summer’s Copa America, with Alisson starting group matches against Venezuela and Colombia and Ederson starting four other games, including the 1-0 final defeat to Argentina in which Angel Di Maria broke his 616-minute international scoreless streak. Weverton also made one start at the tournament.

Since then, Tite has preferred Alisson to guard the Selecao net, giving the Liverpool man eight starts to Ederson’s two (though the latter missed a set of spring qualifiers because of illness).

Form could matter down the stretch, but it's Alisson's job to lose.

As it stands: Alisson

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThiago Silva vs Marquinhos vs Eder Militao

Thiago Silva and Marquinhos will start at centre-back in Brazil’s Group G opener against Serbia. Write it down.

But 24-year-old Eder Militao is just behind, ready in case one of the veterans sustains an injury or begins the tournament in poor form. At club level, Militao helped keep the back-line at the Santiago Bernabeu from crumbling after Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane left Real Madrid. He won La Liga and the Champions League. There are no longer questions about his status as a starting calibre defender on a major squad with high expectations.

Militao participated in Brazil’s World Cup qualification process, starting when Tite rested Silva or Marquinhos. That was an intentional move to get the centre-back comfortable with the head coach’s system and his Selecao team-mates.

There’s also a slim chance Militao starts at right-back, a relatively weak position group for Brazil at the moment.

In any case, he’s up to speed, ready if Tite needs him.

As it stands: Silva and Marquinhos to both start

Getty ImagesDani Alves vs Danilo

That Dani Alves is still in the picture for a starting World Cup place at age 39 says more about Brazil's void on the right side of their defence than his own abilities. Sorry Dani, but that's the truth.

Tite named only one right-back to his squad for the September international break, picking Juventus 31-year-old Danilo, but Alves is considered to be in the conversation despite that omission.

Alves, now at Pumas in Liga MX after a brief return to Barcelona, has played in six games with the Selecao since the start of 2021. He started friendlies against South Korea and Japan in June. The veteran remains in the mix, then, even if he isn't the frontrunner.

Getty ImagesFred vs Bruno Guimaraes

Casemiro is one of the first names on Brazil’s team sheet as their midfield anchor, while new West Ham signing Lucas Paqueta is locked into a starting role because of his versatility. Tite can use Paqueta at almost any width or depth in the midfield or attack and feel comfortable that he can deliver a solid performance – an invaluable trait at a World Cup.

If Tite uses a third central midfielder, then Fred and Bruno Guimaraes would be the likeliest choices.

Fred gets stick at Old Trafford, but Tite trusts him. He started in the Copa America final – though his manager took him off for Roberto Firmino at half-time in search of more attacking firepower – and the Manchester United midfielder continued to be picked throughout World Cup qualifying. The 29-year-old is well-positioned to keep his place, then, particularly if Erik ten Hag keeps giving him club minutes this term.

That said, Guimaraes is one of the fastest rising players in the Selecao camp, suddenly thrusting himself into the line-up picture. From an outsider to even make it to Qatar – he wasn’t part of Brazil’s last Copa America squad – to a contender for the starting XI, it’s been a meteoric rise.

Some people who follow the Selecao wish Tite appreciated Guimaraes more.

“Tite just loves Fred too much,” says Allan Lima, a member of GOAL’s Brazil bureau. “But we over here can dream of Bruno Guimaraes starting!”

Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, one of Tite’s final picks for his Copa America squad, is also a fringe part of the conversation. And if Casemiro sustains an injury, Fabinho would be next-up in the defensive midfield role.

As it stands: Fred
