BCCI show-cause for Modi after ECB allegations

There was further trouble for the suspended IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, after the BCCI today slapped a show-cause notice on him following an email sent by Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman

Cricinfo staff06-May-2010The BCCI has issued a show-cause notice to Lalit Modi, the suspended IPL commissioner, after receiving an email from the ECB alleging activities by Modi that are “detrimental to Indian cricket, English cricket and world cricket at large.” It is believed that the charge pertains to efforts to set up a parallel IPL in the UK, with the help of the counties, that would undermine the ECB.The BCCI said the mail was sent to its president, Shashank Manohar, by Giles Clarke, his counterpart in the ECB. When contacted, the ECB said it had no comment to offer. Modi has 15 days to report to this notice.Modi already faces a show-cause notice issued by the BCCI on April 26 specifying five charges involving the initial franchise bids for Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, the rigging of franchise bids in 2010, the sale of broadcasting and internet rights and his “behavioral pattern”. He is to respond to that notice by May 11.According to PTI, which said it had a copy of the document, the five-page notice issued on Thursday referred to a meeting Modi held on March 31 in Delhi with representatives of English counties including Yorkshire, Lancashire and Warwickshire, in which he is alleged to have discussed a parallel IPL in England and Wales in which eight existing franchises would bid for nine counties in UK.The BCCI’s chargesheet, as quoted by PTI, was detailed. “You have allegedly discussed this as a commercial proposition…and also set out that IPL would guarantee each county a minimum of $3-5 million per annum plus a staging fee of $1.5 million if the counties supported this idea,” it said.”You have allegedly offered a structured deal, by which the returns would be shared 80:20 between the franchises and the counties, a player model based on the IPL model and offered inducement to gather the rest of the county members to support your ideas and goad them to overpower their own governing bodies.”You have allegedly planted a seed of thought of players’ revolt if the governing bodies of respective cricket boards do not allow them to participate in this extended version of IPL.”If Clarke’s allegations were true, it said, Modi’s activities would amount to a blow to “the very foundation of the way cricket is administered and played across the world”.”It challenges not just the authority of BCCI but also (that of) ECB and suggested that IPL would henceforth literally shift to the hands of the franchises and the respective national governing bodies would be forced to watch helplessly while the game and the power of administration are hijacked,” the notice said.”Therefore after due consultation with President BCCI, this show-cause notice is being issued to you, calling upon you to give your explanation to the above grave charges within 15 days of receipt of this show-cause notice, failing which it will be deemed that you have no explanation to offer.”

Rangers: John Souttar remains a target

Rangers remain interested in Hearts’ John Souttar but Blackburn Rovers appear to be leading the race at the moment, according to The Daily Record’s Scott Burns.

The lowdown

Souttar, who can play as a centre-back, right-back and defensive midfielder, is out of contract at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Having unsuccessfully offered him a new deal, Hearts are ‘increasingly resigned’ to losing the 25-year-old.

The four-times capped Scottish international, valued at £720,000 by Transfermarkt, has played 90 minutes in all but two of the Edinburgh club’s league games this season.

The latest

The report states that Rangers were ‘keen’ when Steven Gerrard was manager and that his successor Giovanni van Bronckhorst is also open to the move.

But Rangers may have to act fast if they’re to beat Blackburn to his signature. Rovers have opened talks with Souttar’s camp over a pre-contract agreement for the summer.

They’re ready to offer him a healthy salary boost and are said to be confident of landing him.

Rangers could attempt to sign him in January, but Hearts have made it clear that they’ll only listen to ‘significant’ offers.

The verdict

Would it be a big blow to miss out on Souttar? Arguably, yes. He’s performed very well this season, with his average WhoScored rating of 7.24/10 the highest in the Hearts squad.

He ranks in their top three for goals as well as successful aerial duels, interceptions, clearances and accurate long balls per 90.

Tellingly, former Hibs man Tam McManus tweeted earlier this month that the ‘very impressive’ Souttar was enjoying a ‘superb’ season and ‘walks into both Old Firm teams’.

In other news, Rangers have made a transfer decision over this midfielder.

Wolves recall Sanderson from Birmingham

Many Wolves fans have been left buzzing over the latest news involving Dion Sanderson.

As per the official website of the Molineux faithful, they have now recalled the central defender back from his loan spell at Birmingham City.

He has certainly done well there, ranking highly among his teammates in terms of average interceptions, clearances and blocks per game in the Championship this season (WhoScored).

With Romain Saiss now representing Morocco at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), and both Willy Boly and Yerson Mosquera remaining injured, Sanderson will now give Bruno Lage another handy option for the rest of the term.

At 22 years of age, the Englishman still ha so much potential to fulfil, and it seems fans are extremely excited he will get the chance to continue that development with his parent club.

Wolves fans on Sanderson news

These supporters of the Midlands club were left buzzing as the news on Sanderson was shared on Twitter, with one WWFC supporter hailing the club’s decision to recall the defender as ‘excellent’:

“Excellent. Needs to work on not pulling shirts but he’s got the potential to be a fantastic Wolves player.”

South Africa edge home despite Sammy heroics

A stunning late assault from Darren Sammy couldn’t prevent South Africa sealing a 17-run victory set-up by fifties from Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis in a high-scoring game at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium

The Bulletin by Sahil Dutta24-May-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsOnce Chris Gayle fell to Morne Morkel, South Africa looked to have the result certain•Getty ImagesA stunning late assault from Darren Sammy couldn’t prevent South Africa sealing a 17-run victory set-up by fifties from Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis in a high-scoring game at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium. The match had looked all but over after West Indies had slipped to 236 for 8 in the 45th over, still 65 short of their target but Sammy launched six sixes and two fours on his way to the fastest ODI fifty by a West Indian – from 20 balls. He took the equation to 18 needed off 13 but successive run outs sealed a tense result that had looked a formality for almost the whole game.Earlier South Africa batted with typical efficiency to post 300 for 5. There was no Sammy-style assault on the bowling at any point in their innings, instead slowly and methodically they advanced to an imposing position. Amla pierced the off-side ring with a series of punchy drives early on, before working the ball around with total ease to progress serenely to 92 of 95 balls. Kallis was similarly authoritative, making 85 from 89 balls with just four fours. With David Miller underlining his promise to finish the innings with a quick-fire 26, South Africa reached the 300 mark which looked well clear of what West Indies could chase.Chris Gayle, so often the inspiration in the Caribbean, lifted West Indies’ hopes with a couple of crunching blows early on – including one murderous thump over extra cover off Lonwabo Tsotsobe – but with his dismissal to Morne Morkel there was a collective groan as the vocal crowd realised their main hope of a contest had vanished. The reliance of the home side on their captain is similar to the days where Brian Lara’s fortunes determined West Indies’ but Sammy’s performance, alongside a skilful 74 from Dwayne Bravo, proved the pool of talent runs a little deeper.Ramnaresh Sarwan could have made a real difference, but in the over following Gayle’s fall, he pulled a hamstring running a sharp single and hobbled off the field. It left West Indies without a senior batsman and with question marks lingering over the fitness of a number players in the side. Sarwan had been left out of the team for Zimbabwe’s tour in March on fitness grounds and he hasn’t returned in top condition. Dale Richards, into the side for Andre Fletcher, struggled through the second half of his innings with a pulled muscle himself and earlier Nikita Miller was forced off in the middle of his third over with a rib injury. Each blow proved important as West Indies ultimately fell short. For all the West Indies’ self-inflicted faults, South Africa were impressive. The local supporters must have recognised something faintly familiar about Morkel’s performance. Until Sammy got hold of him at the end Morkel recalled memories of local-boy Curtly Ambrose, as he used his long levers to extract bounce that no other bowler could find on his way to three wickets.Through the middle overs West Indies’ middle order were choked, not only by the quality of South Africa’s bowling and fielding, but by their lack of deftness and ability to work singles. The contrast with Amla and Kallis could not be more apparent. Narsingh Deonarine, batting ahead of Bravo, picked the fielders with frustrating frequency before ending his own anguish by chipping Tsotsobe tamely to mid on.Richards, meanwhile, though never looking dominant, had worked his way to 51 and shared a useful partnership Bravo, but could never quite resist the vice South Africa were slowly closing on his side. His dismissal brought Kieron Pollard to the wicket with West Indies pleading, once again, for a big-hitting miracle. By the time the Batting Powerplay was taken in the 36th over, West Indies needed 9.53 an over and Pollard ended up toe-ending Steyn soon after to be smartly caught by Johan Botha sliding in off the long on boundary. It was Bravo who first gave something for the home crowds to cheer about – and set an example for his team-mates to follow. His 74 came quicker than a run a ball but featured just three fours. He ran superbly and almost laid the foundations for an unexpected victory. His dismissal brought a vaguely farcical scenario where Sarwan took an eternity to drag himself on to the field, only to fall first ball and hobble all the way back off.At that stage the game was as good as done but Sammy had other ideas. He took to his impossible mission with gusto but ended up crestfallen as Miller – using Pollard as a runner – attempted a single to Smith at cover, only for Smith to throw down the stumps and secure a result Sammy had almost ambushed.

Why Spurs should sign Jesse Lingard

Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a shock move for Jesse Lingard, according to reports.

The ever-reliable Alasdair Gold of football.london first reported their interest, claiming on Twitter that Spurs had “sounded out” the 29-year-old’s representatives over a potential move to north London.

This was then backed up by Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam, who delivered an update live on air.

“Tottenham fans will like this one, because potentially, Jesse Lingard is on their radar,” he said. “Tottenham are keen to sign Lingard and they have approached his representatives over the course of this window, potentially with a view to a move in January, possibly, maybe more likely, the summer.”

A move for the England international would certainly raise a few eyebrows around N17 but ultimately, he is clear of Antonio Conte’s current options and as a homegrown player, that’s got to be very appealing heading into next season.

Valued at £18m, Lingard has struggled for game time at Old Trafford recently, playing 273 minutes all season but it was only last term that he excelled during a loan spell at local rivals West Ham United.

As per Transfermarkt, the out-of-favour star delivered nine goals and five assists as he played an integral role in helping the Irons quality for the Europa League ahead of Spurs.

That’s a lot better than what Dele Alli has delivered in a Lilywhites shirt in recent seasons. Across the last three Premier League seasons, the long-serving midfielder has contributed just nine goals and five assists, via WhoScored.

So what Lingard achieved in only six months has been better than the 25-year-old across two-and-a-half years. It’s just not good enough.

During his time at the London Stadium, the United loanee was praised immensely by those around him and the press.

“He’s been phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal,” claimed talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham, before later adding: “On current form, I think Jesse Lingard is the best player in the Premier League.”

Whilst assistant manager Stuart Pearce dubbed him a “special lad” whose “ability shone through” to talkSPORT.

Indeed, he caused Spurs all sorts of problems in the Hammers’ 2-1 win at the London Stadium – not only did he get on the scoresheet but he caused Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier all sorts of nightmares, managing 100% of his dribbles and drawing four fouls, via SofaScore.

On the evidence above, sporting director Fabio Paratici and go could do little wrong in trying to secure Lingard in 2022, whether that’s this month or in the summer.

Moore puts Lancashire into last eight

Lancashire reached the quarter-finals of the Friends Provident t20 for the fourth season running after beating North Division leaders Nottinghamshire

In the process, they gained revenge for a comprehensive defeat at Trent Bridge earlier in the competition and were also thankful for Warwickshire’s win over Yorkshire at Edgbaston. The result continued Lancashire’s impressive record at Old Trafford – they have only lost eight times in eight seasons here, including two this summer. But, despite restricting David Hussey’s side to a below par 136 for 7 after the Australian won the toss and elected to bat, they were forced to chase a Duckworth-Lewis altered target of 81 off 10 overs after an hour’s rain delay.Stephen Moore crashed 51 not out off 24 balls to underpin his side’s nine-wicket win with 10 balls to spare. Alex Hales was the only man who went beyond 11 for the visitors, notching his fourth half-century and finishing with a career-best 83 off 61. He was dropped on 24 by Moore at deep square leg off the bowling of Tom Smith in the seventh over.Hales hit eight fours and a six over midwicket off Sajid Mahmood before being bowled by left-armer Gary Keedy to leave the score at 129 for 7 after 19 overs. Keedy was playing his first game of the season after breaking his right collarbone in a pre-season friendly. He finished with 2 for 27 from his four overs, also dismissing Chris Read.Stand-in captain Mark Chilton opened the bowling with Nathan McCullum and Simon Kerrigan, both spinners, and McCullum finished with 2 for 23. The New Zealander had Ally Brown caught at mid-on by Steven Croft with the fourth ball of the match and later had Steven Mullaney caught and bowled. Mullaney was the only other Notts player to hit a boundary aside from Hales.Smith also chipped in with 2 for 6 but he only bowled two overs. The medium pacer had Matt Wood and Samit Patel caught at mid-wicket and mid on by Chilton and Mahmood respectively. Smith and Moore then shared 43 for the first wicket inside five overs in a definitive opening stand. But Smith was trapped lbw by Ryan Sidebottom for 16.Moore hit sixes over square leg and midwicket off Darren Pattinson and Dirk Nannes in the first two overs of the reply. A feature of the home side’s batting was also their running between the wickets, turning ones into twos on a regular basis.Moore hit a 24-ball half-century in a win against Yorkshire last Friday but bettered that by one ball tonight. Croft (15 not out off 12 balls) hit Graeme White for six over long on to confirm the win. Notts still need a victory from their last two matches to guarantee a home draw in the last eight.

Leeds: Sky Sports share Brenden Aaronson update

Sky Sports News have revealed what they know about Leeds United’s pursuit of RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson.

The Lowdown: Leeds making moves

The Whites have taken their time when it comes to making moves in the January transfer window, but it seems as if Victor Orta and co are finally acting on possible midfield additions.

According to The Athletic’s Sam Stejskal, the Whites have had a £15m offer rejected for Aaronson and are intent on signing him before the end of the month.

The Mirror’s David Anderson has also revealed that Leeds have made a bid for another unnamed player, with Orta ‘busy’ working on incomings.

The Latest: Sky Sports News claim

Sky Sports News shared details of Leeds’ interest in Aaronson on Tuesday evening.

In their Transfer Centre blog (18/01, 20:33), they revealed that talks have been held over a possible move, however, they didn’t make any mention of a £15m bid an hour on from Stejskal’s claim.

They also added:

“Sky Sports News has been told that Philadelphia Union would be due a significant percentage of any transfer fee for Aaronson.”

That news could perhaps be the reason behind Salzburg’s rejection of the opening bid, with a bigger fee needed to tempt them when a chunk of it will go straight to the MLS outfit.

The Verdict: Needed

Marcelo Bielsa is yet to make a permanent midfield signing at Elland Road but now appears to be the right time with options limited.

Aaronson is primarily an attacking midfielder, something Leeds don’t have at this moment in time. He also has experience at the highest level for both club and country, and at the age of 21, you’d expect his current £10.8m Transfermarkt valuation will only increase.

Therefore, a winter window transfer could be a smart one in both the short and long term, so hopefully, Orta can get a deal over the line over the line in the next two weeks.

Katich ends t20 Lancashire stint in style

Simon Katich signed off his Friends Provident t20 campaign in spectacular style with a match-winning innings for Lancashire against Leicestershire

25-Jun-2010
ScorecardSimon Katich signed off his Friends Provident t20 campaign in spectacular style with a match-winning innings for Lancashire Lightning against Leicestershire Foxes in their North Group clash at Grace Road. The Australian left-hander smashed a blistering 41 off 19 balls, hitting eight boundaries, as Lancashire chased down a victory target of 177 to win by six wickets with three balls to spare. The Foxes had posted a challenging 176 for 6 – their best score of the season – with Jacques Du Toit and James Taylor both making half-centuries. But Lancashire were always up with the required rate and Katich finished things off with a boundary blitz that sent the Foxes crashing to their fourth defeat in a row at home.It is Katich’s final game for Lancashire in the competition. After playing for them this weekend in the County Championship game against Yorkshire he joins up with the Australian squad for the forthcoming Test series against Pakistan.Lancashire were given the perfect start to their chase by openers Stephen Moore and Tom Smith who put on 44 in the first five overs. Moore stuck three sixes in his 26 off 15 balls and Smith hit three fours and a six as he made 32 off 25 balls.Steven Croft continued the Lancashire charge with a quickfire 42 off 36 balls and also included a six before being brilliantly caught behind by Paul Nixon off the bowling of James Benning. But it was only left-arm spinner Claude Henderson who caused any real trouble to the visitors claiming two wickets in two balls to give Foxes some hope of a victory. But Katich and Paul Horton snatched that away from them in a fifth-wicket stand, with Katich hitting six boundaries off the first 10 balls he faced. He smashed two more in the final over to send his side to victory with three balls remaining. Horton made 30 off 21 deliveries. The Leicestershire innings was dominated by Du Toit and Taylor, who shared a third-wicket stand of 92 in 11 overs. Du Toit made 69 off 50 balls, hitting three sixes and five sixes and Taylor was once again impressive in a knock of 61 off just 37 balls with three sixes and four fours. But it was not enough to end the Foxes’ nightmare run of form at home.

West Brom make late bid for Matt O’Riley

West Bromwich Albion have made a late offer in a bid to secure a deal to bring Matt O’Riley to The Hawthorns in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Record, who claim that Valerien Ismael’s Albion side have attempted to hijack Celtic’s move for the Milton Keynes Dons central midfielder with an 11th-hour bid for the 21-year-old.

However, the report goes on to state that, at present, it appears as if the former England U18 international is still set to make a £1.5m switch to Glasgow, with O’Riley having already undergone a medical with the Premiership side on Wednesday.

Finally, it is also believed that the likes of Swansea City, Blackburn Rovers and Huddersfield Town were also keen on a move for the midfielder, although it would appear as if West Brom and Celtic are the only two sides who lodged a concrete bid.

Ismael’s next Mowatt

While, at this stage, it seems as if a move to West Brom does not look overly likely, considering just how impressive O’Riley has been for MK Dons this season, it would appear highly advisable for Ismael to return with an improved offer in a bid to steal the 21-year-old away from Celtic’s clutches.

Indeed, over his 26 League One outings in the current campaign, the £405k-rated man has been in astonishing form, having already bagged seven goals, provided five assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, in addition to making an average of 2.1 key passes and taking 1.5 shots per game.

The £900-per-week midfielder – who is also adept at playing in both a more defensive and attacking midfield role – has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.5 interceptions, two tackles, 48.2 passes, one clearance and winning 4.6 duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the player who FLW founder Sam Rourke dubbed a “star” average a quite incredible SofaScore match rating of 7.37, not only ranking him as his club’s second-best performer in the league but also as the joint seventh-best player in the entirety of the division.

The editor then went on to heap a great deal more praise on the midfielder, stating in a post on Twitter: “[He is an] elegant central attacking midfielder who is comfortable with both feet. Seven goals, five assists in L1 so far. Strong dribbling ability with a real eye for a killer pass. Not afraid to shoot from distance too.”

Indeed, this description could quite easily fit one of Albion’s current options in the middle of the park, Alex Mowatt, who scored eight goals, registered seven assists and created nine big chances over his 44 Championship appearances for Barnsley last season, as well as making an average of 1.5 key passes and taking 1.8 shots per fixture.

As such, should Ismael manage to somehow get a deal over the line for O’Riley this month, the Frenchman could well have landed his next Mowatt, not to mention a significant upgrade on a number of the Baggies’ current central midfield options.
