Leeds eye record-breaking deal for Matheus Cunha

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is said to be eyeing a record-breaking move for Hertha BSC star Matheus Cunha.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from German publication Bild (via Sport Witness), Bielsa’s side have already expressed their interest in signing the forward, and that a move could be on the cards after the 22-year-old received approval from Hertha to leave.

Now, The Berliner Kurier claim that Leeds are set to face significant competition from the likes of Napoli, AS Monaco and Atalanta, and that Cunha’s price could be driven to the €40m (£34m) mark because of the added interest.

Fans will be buzzing

After smashing their club record to bring Rodrigo to Elland Road last summer for around £27m, it appears Bielsa is intent on doing the same this time around for Cunha.

At the reported £34m mark, that would blow the Rodrigo deal out of the water, and signal another statement of intent from the likes of Andrea Radrizzani and co that the club mean business and are willing to back Bielsa big-time in the transfer market.

Dubbed as “something special” by former Hertha BSC boss Bruno Labbadia, the £55k-a-week earning Cunha enjoyed a superb campaign in the Bundesliga last season, scoring eight goals and providing another eight assists in all competitions.

At 22, he has still got plenty of time to realise his potential, and Bielsa will likely feel that the versatile forward could thrive under his leadership.

But most importantly for him and the club’s fans, a record-breaking deal would be a real indication of the kind of big step Leeds want to take next season and will surely have everyone buzzing.

Actions speak louder than words of course, and if Radrizzani dips into his pocket to sign off on a £34m deal for Cunha, then it would really capture the imagination of the Elland Road faithful.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa is surely buzzing with this Victor Orta transfer update…

Pushing Tendulkar and Dravid around

There are two objections to Dravid being asked tokeep wickets

Partab Ramchand24-May-2002Teams gearing up for a mega-event like the World Cup or theOlympics start their preparations months in advance. Under thecircumstances, it is heartening to learn from reports that theIndian team management is already thinking of changes in terms ofstrategy and team composition for the World Cup in South Africawhich, at the moment of writing, is around nine months away.

There are two objections to Dravid being asked tokeep wickets. One, as one of the side’s principal batsmen yes, even in limited-overs cricket he should be left free toconcentrate on his work in front of the stumps.

The upcoming one-day series in the West Indies has given Indiathe opportunity to unearth the combination best suited to theside that the team management obviously hopes will help Indiaregain the World Cup after 20 years. But the thinking in terms oftactical changes should be along logical lines and not haphazardor muddled.According to reports, Rahul Dravid will once again go back to hisall-too-familiar though quite unwelcome role behind thestumps for the first one-day international against the WestIndies. Given the fact that the team management is looking aheadto the World Cup, one has to view this development with someapprehension, for it means that Dravid may once again beconsidered for a permanent role behind the stumps even thoughthere is a regular wicket-keeper around in Ajay Ratra. The movesounds wholly unnecessary and retrograde.During the 1999 World Cup in England, Nayan Mongia was the side’sregular keeper, but that did not stop the team management at thetime from fielding Dravid as the stumper in the game against SriLanka. Thankfully India batted first and Dravid scored 145,sharing in a record partnership of 318 for the second wicket withSourav Ganguly. Not unexpectedly, his work as a keeper just aboutpassed muster. Mercifully, the needless experiment was notrepeated, and Mongia returned for the remaining matches. There are two objections to Dravid being asked to keep wickets. One, as one of the side’s principal batsmen yes, even inlimited-overs cricket he should be left free to concentrate onhis work in front of the stumps. After all, he is not aspecialist wicket-keeper batsman like Adam Gilchrist. Secondly, after a couple of years of groping in the dark, the selectorshave finally found a capable youngster behind the stumps. Ratra’skeeping, good in his first couple of Tests, has improved further,as his catch to dismiss Brian Lara in the Kingston Testillustrated. He has also proved his credentials with the bat bygetting a hundred in only his third Test, just when it was leastexpected. This is the time, then, to give him all encouragement, and dropping him – even temporarily – is bound to have an adverseeffect on the youngster.According to John Wright, Ganguly has already spoken to Dravid, who is reported to have said that he has no problem in keepingwicket. Dravid is too much of a gentleman cricketer and a teamman to raise any protest. He has been willing to play any role”in the team’s interests,” as the cliché goes even that of areluctant opening batsman. But just how far the team’s interestshave been served in shoving him into the role of opening batsmanor wicket-keeper is open to question. In the long run, such stepsare bound to have an adverse impact on both Dravid’s batsmanshipand the team’s interests. It is argued that playing Dravid as a specialist batsman meansthat the team management will have to sacrifice one of the fouryoungsters – Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Mongia andVirender Sehwag. True; besides being capable batsmen, the foursare very good fielders who can also chip in with a few overs ofspin. But there is nothing wrong in making youngsters earn theirIndia caps and a regular place in the side. It should not behanded over to them gratis. The other decision to play Sachin Tendulkar at number three orfour when India are chasing big scores is a welcome step. Wrightcould not have explained the rationale behind the move better.”We have been failing in our bid to chase big scores for sometime now, and we felt that it would be great to have a batsmanlike Sachin to finish the job at the death.”At the moment, there are four opening batsmen in the team Ganguly, Tendulkar, Sehwag and Dinesh Mongia. It may be a goodidea to shuffle the order a bit in the series against the WestIndies and try out various combinations. In the long run specifically keeping the World Cup in mind it may be worthwhileto have two of Ganguly, Sehwag and Mongia open the batting anddrop Tendulkar down the order. This series and the tour ofEngland give the team management the right opportunities to tryand settle the batting order at the top with the World Cup inmind.Indeed, it sounds a good idea to have an experienced, classy andhighly skilled batsman like Tendulkar to guide the team home inpressure situations from the pivotal number four slot. It isworth recalling at this juncture the circumstances in whichTendulkar first opened the Indian innings in a one-dayinternational in New Zealand in 1994.At the time, following the retirement of Kris Srikkanth, the needof the hour was a player who could take maximum advantage of thefield restrictions in the first 15 overs. Tendulkar opted to goin first after an injury to Navjot Singh Sidhu, and theexperiment was such a whopping success that he stayed at the top, later forming, with Ganguly, one of the most destructive openingpairs in limited-overs cricket. Now the situation is a tad different. With Ganguly, Sehwag andMongia around and all of them are capable of belting the attackin the initial stages perhaps the time has indeed come forTendulkar to be slotted at number four when India are pursuing abig target. India’s record as chasers is anything but impressive, and perhaps this move could improve that record. Innovation isthe name of the game, and strategy and tactics, thinking andplanning have a place in one-day cricket. It is good that the team management is taking a long-term view. But then, as I said, the thinking and planning should be alonglogical lines and not muddled. The move to push Tendulkar downthe order has some sound reasoning behind it. The move to pushDravid once again behind the stumps is both unfair to Ratra anddetrimental to the team’s interests in the long run.

Come and meet Stumpy at the Sri Lanka match on Friday

Stumpy, the new Somerset mascot, has an apology to make to all of those folk who turned out at Bath on Sunday especially to meet him

Richard Walsh17-Jun-2002Stumpy, the new Somerset mascot, has an apology to make to all of those folk who turned out at Bath on Sunday especially to meet him. Sadly he has been feeling under the weather and has been confined to his new home near Taunton.Happily he is now feeling back on top of the world and is planning to make an appearance at the 1 day match at the County Ground on Friday when Somerset entertain Sri Lanka.Talking through his interpreter Joanne Betsworth, who seems to enjoy a close affinity with Stumpy, he told me: "I’m so sorry that I had to let everybody down on Sunday, but I just couldn’t face the long journey the way that I was feeling. However I will be there on Friday and will be looking forward to meeting everybody both young and old at the ground so please do come and say hello."I’m sure that everybody will overlook his absence on Sunday, and will look forward to seeing him on Friday during the match against Sri Lanka.

Liverpool should sell Takumi Minamino

Liverpool should axe Takumi Minamino this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to rebuild his first team squad.

What’s the story?

According to Hampshire Live, the Anfield outfit have changed their stance over the 26-year-old and are now open to letting him leave during the upcoming transfer window.

The report claims that Liverpool are keen to make a profit on the player they bought for just £7.25m 18 months ago and that Minamino is open to a return to Southampton after enjoying a short-term loan on the south coast.

He’s been shocking

Although the Japan international arrived on Merseyside with a sizeable amount of expectation after impressing in Champions League fixtures against the Reds, he’s struggled to live up to those hopes during his time with Klopp’s charges.

Minamino managed just four goals and two assists in 31 Liverpool appearances before being shipped off to the Saints in January, despite his parent club’s struggles.

The fact that Klopp was willing to let the diminutive forward depart despite the huge drop-off in form Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were experiencing throughout 2020/21 is rather telling of where the 26-year-old lies in the German’s plans.

However, Minamino’s time with Southampton was slightly more successful (two goals in 10 games), and his energetic style clearly won over manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

“I must say. He was a very lively factor in our game, in the games he played. He not only scored fantastic goals but his mentality and his character really fit into our team. You can see why a club like Liverpool wanted to sign him,” said the Austrian.

“He did a good job here. We gave him a chance to show up. We will have a look what happens in the summer, we will see what Liverpool want to do. There are discussions going on, but we will have a look in the summer.”

Nevertheless, Minamino’s improvement under Hassenhuttl doesn’t hide the fact that the £75,000-per-week Liverpool flop was largely underwhelming, receiving a lowly WhoScored rating of 6.39 for the 2020/21 season.

Money is expected to be tight at Anfield this summer, and Klopp could use the funds generated by his sale to invest in the starting XI, greatly improving Liverpool’s chances of regaining their Premier League crown next season.

Championship wins for Durham and Nottinghamshire on day three

Surrey are well on the way to another Championship win after forcing Warwickshire to follow on at The Oval

Stephen Lamb & Ralph Dellor12-Jul-2002Surrey are well on the way to another Championship win after forcing Warwickshire to follow on at The Oval. After a second double century in consecutive games from Mark Ramprakash set up a first-innings total of 475, James Ormond (five for 116) and Saqlain Mushtaq (four for 97) combined to dismiss the hosts for 293. Neil Smith (74) was top scorer for Warwickshire, who ended the day on 165 for three in their second innings, still 17 runs behind. Mike Powell is on 66 not out.A century from Neil Burns carried Leicestershire to within 11 runs of Hampshire’s first-innings total at Grace Road, before Phil DeFreitas got amongst the visitors’ top order in their second innings. He took three for 31 as Hampshire closed on 102 for four, 113 runs ahead. Captain Robin Smith is unbeaten on 40.Sussex have made a much better fist of their second innings against Kent at Hove than they did of their first. After Ed Smith made 141 to give Kent a first-innings lead of 204, Sussex looked to be struggling terminally at 54 for three. However Murray Goodwin (108*) and Timothy Ambrose (101*) have compiled an unbroken double century partnership for the fourth wicket to put the hosts back into contention. It does not look as if Yorkshire are going to get their first win of the season against Somerset. They trail by 240 with four wickets intact. Replying to Somerset’s 498 for nine declared, Yorkshire are 258 for six with half centuries for Darren Lehmann, Richard Blakey and Vic Craven. In Division Two, Durham ended their barren spell and at the same time brought Derbyshire down to earth with an 89 run win. There were four wickets for Kevin Dean as Durham were bowled out for 203 in their second innings, leaving Derbyshire to score 299 to win. They got off to a reasonable start with a 58 run opening partnership between Stephen Stubbings (30) and Michael Di Venuto (40), but although there were other useful contributions down the order there was nobody fashioning the big innings around which everyone else could bat and Durham got home inside three days.Leaders Essex are in all sorts of trouble against Worcestershire. They trail by 61 with five second innings wickets in hand after reaching 115 for five. Earlier Worcestershire had taken their first innings to 373 with Steve Rhodes scoring 56. There was a maiden championship half century for Mark Pettini in the Essex second innings.Andy Strauss scored 82 and Sven Koenig 59 as Middlesex reached 297 for nine against Gloucestershire, but they still trail by 91. So far there have been five wickets for Ian Fisher. While that match is heading for a draw, it would seem, Nottinghamshire have beaten Glamorgan by seven wickets. They bowled out Glamorgan for 211 despite 55 from Matthew Maynard. There were five wickets for Paul Franks on his return after a lengthy injury. Set 97 to win, Jason Gallian was unbeaten on 55 when his side achieved their victory.

Bent: Everton will listen to offers for Moise Kean - Exclusive

Everton will listen to offers for Moise Kean this summer, former Toffees striker Marcus Bent has told The Transfer Tavern.

Kean spent the 2020/21 season out on loan at Paris Saint-Germain, where he performed exceptionally well.

The 21-year-old forward scored just under 20 goals in all competitions and the Ligue 1 outfit now want to keep him for another year.

According to Fabrizio Romano, PSG are looking to do another loan deal rather than pay the £35m-40m Everton want for a permanent transfer.

However, Bent has suggested that if Kean is to leave again, the Merseyside club will look for a transfer fee based on what he has heard.

“We would consider it at the right price,” the ex-Everton player told TT when asked about Kean’s future. “He’s young, he’s a good player and he’s clearly talented – and that’s what I got from Everton people behind the scenes.”

It probably makes sense for Everton to hear from their next manager before selling Kean.

If he plays two up top, he could use the Italian alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who also had a prolific 2020/21 campaign.

Kean’s pace could complement Calvert-Lewin’s aerial threat – won 4.7 aerial duels per league game last season (via WhoScored) – pretty nicely.

Bull wants Wolves to sign Vitinha permanently - Exclusive

Vitinha starred for Portugal at the U21s European Championships earlier this month and despite limited chances at Wolves last season, former striker Steve Bull would like to see his former club keep the 21-year old.

Wolves brought Vitinha in on loan last summer under the watchful eyes of Jorge Mendes and Nuno Espirito Santo, but despite failing to set the place alight the Midlands club have an option to buy him for just £18 million.

If Nuno was still at Molineux it would likely just be a formality that Vitinha would sign permanently, however, under new boss Bruno Lage it’s unclear what type of players he wants to bring in. Not bringing Vitinha in for just £18 million could be a mistake, though.

Wolves have often operated with both Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in midfield and Bull believes they need a more physical presence in the middle of the pitch, but that does not signal the end for Vitinha at Molineux, as he explained exclusively to Football FanCast:

“We need somebody bigger in the middle of the park with a bit of height who can get the odd goal and I don’t think he could do that for us.

“I would keep him for that amount of money because you’re going to get a lot back when he establishes himself as a top player.”

Vitinha was never given a real chance to impress with his first start in the Premier League not coming until December 29th and then only another four followed for the 21-year old.

It would appear to be a sensible decision to keep Vitinha at the club as Wolves would likely be able to sell him on for a profit in a few years or he could develop into a first-team regular if given more minutes to play alongside the likes of Neves and Moutinho.

'Good to be back' says Stumpy ahead of Sabres clash against Outlaws

In reply to a number of enquiries that the website has received from concerned fans, Somerset Sabres friendly dragon mascot Stumpy has talked to us about his re-appearance tomorrow after a period of enforced absence

Richard Walsh18-Aug-2002In reply to a number of enquiries that the website has received from concerned fans, Somerset Sabres friendly dragon mascot Stumpy has talked to us about his re-appearance tomorrow after a period of enforced absence. From his secret hideaway deep in the heart of the Somerset countryside Stumpy told me: “It seems like a lifetime since I was last at the County Ground, but after being away for seven weeks it will be good to be back amongst all my friends, and I am really looking forward to it.”Stumpy will be at the County Ground for the crucial day-night relegation NUL National League match between Somerset Sabres and Nottingham Outlaws, that gets underway 4.10pm tomorrow. The last time that Stumpy was at the ground the Sabres suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Worcester Royals, so tomorrow he will be hoping to bring the team better luck. One thing Stumpy can be assured of is a large crowd to welcome his return to the ground which has become his spiritual home since he first appeared earlier this season.Membership secretary Jo Betsworth told me earlier: “There has already been a large interest in the match and we are expecting one of our biggest crowds of the season to watch the Sabres take on Nottingham Outlaws. As well as the cricket there will be a number of other activities including the ever popular face painting, and of course the return of Stumpy who will be walking round the ground to meet his friends and sign autographs.”With a large crowd expected, the advice to those who are going along to the ground is to arrive well in advance of the action on the field. With the game being televised there will certainly be no shortage of entertainment so everybody is guaranteed a good time.Lets just hope that the Sabres get the result that they so desperately need from the match to help them climb away from the relegation zone.

Wolves transfer update on Mosquera

Many Wolves fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Yerson Mosquera.

As per the official website of the Midlands club, the central defender is their first signing of the summer window, subject to a medical and work permit.

He will sign on a deal for five years, and as technical director Scott Sellars has claimed, had ‘a lot of interest’ from other teams across Europe.

Sellars also described Mosquera as a player who is ‘very athletic, very aggressive, very competitive’ and ‘has a great attitude to defending’.

These are certainly qualities that should assure that the Colombian will be able to cope with both the physical and aerial demands of the Premier League, and at just 20 years of age, he clearly has a lot of potential that can be fulfilled while at Molineux.
